Eugene Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home - Godfrey on Feb. 27, 2026.
Dateline: Grafton, Illinois

Eugene "Gene" Glenn Smith, 82, passed away on February 25, 2026, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Gene was born on March 29, 1943, in Floral Park, New York, to Glenn and Ethel (Beaumont) Smith.

He married Donna Bailey on December 23, 1966, in Lee's Summit, Missouri, and together they built a life centered on family, service, and community.

Gene proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he became the owner and operator of Baronwood Kennels in Florissant, Missouri, a business he ran from 1971 until 2008. His love for dogs was well known, and his dedication to their care earned him many lasting friendships and loyal clients.

A man of many interests and deep community involvement, Gene had a great love for art and founded the Grafton Art Gallery. He also served his community as a proud Republican Election Official and was a member of the Grafton Planning and Zoning Commission. Gene's commitment to civic duty and local development reflected his passion for the town he called home.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Donna; his daughter, Kim (Greg) Saguto of St. Charles, Missouri; his grandchildren, Trevor Saguto (Hannah Bergfield) and Thomas Saguto (Lily Gordon); his brother, Alan (Rhona) Smith of Connecticut; and several nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 2, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, Illinois.

Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to National Memorial of Military Ascent - Grafton, IL.
