Eustathios Louvis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home on Jan. 11, 2026.
Eustathios "Steve" Louvis passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life centered on family, hard work, and the Montclair community he called home.

Steve was born on September 16, 1934, and raised in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. He was the son of George Louvis, who opened Louvis Char-Broil on Valley Road in 1923, and Aphrodite Louvis (née Xanthos). Both of his parents were natives of Sparta, Greece, and they instilled in him a strong work ethic, deep loyalty to family, and pride in his heritage.

Steve proudly carried on the family business, Louvis Char-Broil, which became a Montclair institution for generations. From its founding in 1923 until Steve sold the business and retired in 1989, the restaurant was far more than a place to eat. It was a neighborhood gathering spot, a first job for many, and a constant presence in the lives of countless Montclair residents.

To those who worked there, Steve was more mentor than boss. He led by example and never asked anyone to do work he wouldn't do himself. If something needed to be done - even the unpleasant tasks - Steve handled it. That approach earned him deep respect and fostered a sense of camaraderie that many former employees still remember fondly.

Louvis Char-Broil was truly a family business. Over the years, nearly everyone in the family worked there in one role or another, sharing in both the responsibilities and the relationships that came with it.

Since his passing, the family has heard from many former employees who spoke warmly of their time working with Steve. Though restaurant work could be stressful, it was also filled with humor, teamwork, and a sense that everyone was valued. Those messages have been a source of comfort and a testament to the kind of environment Steve created.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Ann Louvis (née DuBois), originally from Bridgeton, New Jersey. Together they raised two sons, George Louvis and Frank Louvis.

He was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his grandchildren Damon Cordova, Jonathan Louvis, Benjamin Louvis, and Elizabeth Louvis, and by his great-grandchildren Parker Louvis, Griffin Louvis, and Evelyn Louvis, who brought him great joy.

Steve is also survived by his sister, Mary Theodos, along with many extended family members, longtime friends, and members of the Montclair community who knew him through family, work, and shared history.

Outside of family and work, Steve had a lifelong love of bowling. He bowled in leagues for decades at Bellclare Lanes in Montclair and at The Commonwealth Club in Upper Montclair, where friendships were built and stories were shared one frame at a time.

Steve will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, mentor, and family man - someone who believed in showing up, working hard, and treating people with fairness and respect.

The Louvis Family lived on the floor below us at 621 Valley Road (above Angelbecks), and our family knew them all well. I was honored to have known Steve and have frequently enjoyed his Greek Chicken Soup. Always a friendly greeting from him, Mary, and Pete. R.I.P. Steve.
