Eva “JoAnn” Gunderson ~ October 1, 1948 – December 14, 2025
Eva JoAnn Gunderson, age 77, of North Mankato, passed away peacefully at her home on December 14, 2025, surrounded by her family.
JoAnn was born on October 1, 1948, in Newfoundland, Canada, to Elden D. and Christina D. (Janes) Ankrum. Growing up in a military family, she traveled extensively with her father’s Air Force assignments, living in France, New York, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Iowa before settling in Mankato, Minnesota. It was there, on the dance floor of the Kato Ballroom, that she met the love of her life, Gerald “Butch” Gunderson.
JoAnn graduated from Good Counsel Academy in 1967 and married Butch on April 20, 1968, in Algona, Iowa. They shared 44 wonderful years together until his passing in 2012.
A devoted homemaker and caretaker, JoAnn also worked in a variety of roles, including The Century Club, Head Start, Stan A. Smith Jewelry, and Golden Heart. Her most cherished position was at Monroe Elementary, where she retired. Known affectionately as “Miss JoAnn,” she delighted in being recognized by former students and their families.
JoAnn’s passions included playing cards with her card club—often late into the night—traveling to Las Vegas with Butch, attending the annual NASCAR races, casino trips with the girls, and tending to her gardens. Her green thumb was legendary, with beautiful plants and flowers gracing both the farm and apartment. If you ever told her how much you loved her banana bars or pickles you were sure to get a pan and a bucket! She was an amazing cook and baker. When anyone was in need JoAnn made sure to provide comforting food.
Above all, JoAnn treasured her family. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she loved sharing stories about them and about her beloved Gerry.
She is survived by her children: Mike (Theresa) Gunderson, Steven Gunderson, and Julie (Joe) Bigaouette; grandchildren: Tommy, Mitchell, Liam, and Ella; siblings: Dan (Linda) Ankrum, Barb Ankrum, Ron (Vickie) Ankrum, Ed (Sue) Ankrum, and Sherry (Brian) Fahey; along with nieces, nephews, extended family, and many close friends.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Butch (2012), and her son Tommy (1994).
Known for her generosity and willingness to help anyone in need, JoAnn leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and joy. She is now reunited with Gerry, dancing once again, and holding her Tommy close.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
