While I unpacked my former life, my very first days in Madison, young Evan Sasman was doing the same. We became brothers for a long time. Our penthouse room high above Langdon and Lake was a launch pad for Evans's deep intellect which he could apply to a mighty wide range of topics.
He and I among many other friends became devoted advocates of Progressivism back the early 70's. He practiced what he preached from the heart.
Down the road a ways, we were heading for Denver cruising in his old Bonneville across American plains. "Go West" we did. He stayed there to go on with his education and career. Connie was his greatest discovery in the Rockies.
Returning to Wisconsin revved up his aspirations and efforts to be a writer. He loved his wife and kids completely. He'd taken up sailing and found a softball team in Ashland.
When Connie was diagnosed they were staying with my family, near UW hospital. Her sad prognosis that late summer evening stunned me but not Evan. He had to get back in the game, again. As he had a few years before I met him in Madison, recovering from an earlier misfortune in a hayfield.
Evan became an artist before I met him. He read Ferlinghetti and listened to Leonard Cohen and wrote poetry and prose like he meant to. Maybe, his literary success was just another insight away for our earthly Evan.
Not far however; just a little ways through the mist from here, where Connie will take his hands in hers and dance to their favorite songs.
May Nature's Way Bless Him In the Next World.
