Evangeline Melzeta May was born on October 15, 1945, in Chicago IL, she preferred to be called by her middle name Melzeta. She departed this life on January 1, 2023, at the age of 77. She was the youngest of a host of siblings and born to the late Rev. William Horton Sr. and Aletha Kitts whom she lost at a young age.
Melzeta attended Hersey High School and went on to further her education at Loop Jr College where she received her associates degree. She accepted Christ at an early age at St. Dorothy Parish. Melzeta was united in holy matrimony the James L. May, this marriage was blessed with 3 children, Penny, Elonna, and Duwana.
Melzeta worked for the Illinois Department of Employment Security for 29 years where she retired in 2006 due to illness. Melzeta was known for her beautiful personality and sassiness always saying what was on her mind. She loved to travel and play her slot machines. She didn't drive but could take you from A to Z on the bus or train.
She was preceded in death by her parents William Horton and Aletha Kitts, sister Jervine Horton, sister Alberta Beach, brother William Horton Jr., grandson (Willie Zsarod Love) and other relatives.
Melzeta is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 57 years James L May; 3 daughters Penny of Chicago IL, Elonna (Jeffery) of Bayville, NJ, and Duwana (Roy) of Cumming, GA; 3 grandsons Rafael Roberson, Marquis Russell, and Orthis Russell; and 5 great grandchildren Aaliyah, Rafael Jr., G'Yanna, Zion, Nailah. Melzeta also leaves numerous family members and friends that will cherish her memory.
