Evelyn Walker

Evelyn Walker was born on January 14, 1932 in Wichita Falls, TX, to the late Hattie Mae Williams, (née Long), and Rev. Asia Flye. She attended and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School (Wichita Falls) in 1949. As a young adult, she worked at Mr. Lucas' Grocery Store on Flood Street. Later in life, she was a Nurse's Aide at what was then Wichita Falls Senior High School and later taught nutrition classes for the Texas Agriculture Extension Service.

Evelyn was a singer - she traveled and sang the Blues with Big Daddy Pat, but later dedicated her talents to singing for the Lord in church. At the time of her demise, she was the last original member of Jackson Memorial COGIC where she served faithfully on several committees until relocating to Rockwall, TX in 2009.

Evelyn was an entrepreneur- owning and operating several locations of Evelyn's Stop Shop on the city's Eastside. She was also faithful to her booth at the Flea Market every Saturday, playing her Gospel music and selling her signature carpet squares and other items that she procured from her frequent trips to Dallas. Evelyn was also a Licensed Foster Parent and opened her home to over twenty children and young adults who were in need of immediate and long-term care and nurturing.

If you knew her, you knew that she took great pride in maintaining an immaculate lawn and having a beautiful flower garden at all times.
