Everette Jerald West was born on August 14, 1947, in Robeson County, Lumberton, North Carolina, to the late Henry Elwood and Addie Myrle West. A devoted student of his family's building trades and commercial construction company he went on to build a dedicated career as a home builder at West Construction Company of Ridgeway, Virginia. He later worked as a sales professional in the retail automobile business, and finally as a millwright until his retirement.

In his youth, Everette was a vibrant and talented billiards player, known for his competitive edge and love of the game. His passion for competitive sport and wagering, handicap expertise extended into his life of enjoying thoroughbred racing where he found joy in hours of calculating odds and percentages for the unrestrained wildly competitive and freedom of the horses, that he related to passionately, where he became renowned for his witty and prosperous days at the Kentucky Derby, which he shared with family and friends. He had a deep love for large family gatherings hosted by his eldest daughter, Stephanie and spending time with his siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren embracing both activities with laughter and thrills of equal delight.

A devoted father, son, grandson, nephew, cousin, uncle, and brother, to a very large family of nine siblings, he stood out by his protective nature as a leader who possessed the strength, wisdom and courage to overcome any obstacle placed before him for those he loved most.

Faith played an integral role in Everette’s life. He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a committed churchgoer, attending services regularly where he lived with his gracious and loving daughter, Stephanie, who would eventually become his caregiver for years and up until the day of his untimely death.

Everette was a parishioner of Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, in Spartanburg, SC. He also very much enjoyed daily mass at Jesus Our Risen Savior Catholic Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He enjoyed visits with his best friend Rabbi, Andy Meyerson who brought a lifetime of friendship, laughter, and love. Everette leaves behind a legacy of love, kinship, perseverance, courage, and strength. He is survived by his daughters that he loved beyond measure;

Stephanie, (Paul Wojcik) of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Jeri LeAnne (Les Hussey) of Martinsville, Virginia. His ex-wife Sharon Austin of Rockport, Texas, and her two daughters, Michelle and Lisa. Ten beautiful and successful grandchildren, Ashley, (Benjamin) Eskew of Harriman, Tennessee, Courtney (Scott) Allred of Denton, North Carolina, Tyler Brown (Ellie) of Goose Creek, South Carolina, Jessica (Michael) Whitaker of Mapleton, Illinois, Sydney (Tyler) Green of Martinsville, Virginia, Christian Hull, Washington DC, Ashton Casterline of Norfolk, Virginia, Seth, Ethan and Gabriel Riggle of Louisville, Kentucky, and 11 precious great - grandchildren, Kayla, Mason, Benson, Kynlee , Holden, Elias, Asa, Adalyn, Zoe, Ella and Adrian. His Sisters, Robin (Danny Joe) Brockett, of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Linda ( Tilly) Harris of Martinsville, Virginia, a Brother, Bruce West of Punta Gorda, Florida, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbors who were touched by his charisma, fragility, humor, humility, tenderness, warmth and generosity.

On Thursday, October 2, 2025, Everette Jerald West passed away peacefully with his beloved daughter, Stephanie and Paul by his side in prayer, at the Hospital, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at the age of 78. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.


Mass of Christian burial for Everette Jerald West was celebrated by Father Eric Paluku, CRM, assisting at the altar was Deacon Peter Brown. Music by Saint Paul The Apostle choir led by John Roche, at Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Historical Church, 161 N. Dean Street on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 4 PM. The Knights of Columbus honor guard will be in procession attendance. Right of committal inurnment ceremony, graveside, will be at the Old West Family cemetery in Robeson County, North Carolina. The bus will leave Spartanburg South Carolina at 9 AM for those who wish to participate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: The Old Boys’ Home Orphanage Fund, payable to Rabbi Andy Meyerson, and to the Adorno Fathers Monastery payable to JORS in Goose Creek, South Carolina, and to the Franciscan Society payable to Dr. Sister Rose Michael.

Stephanie would like to thank everyone with her whole heart for their kind words, gifts, masses, flowers, and prayers, and most of all for their love.
