Dear Mrs. Rowland, I was so sorry to read about the death of your husband. The name "Sherry Rowland" remains with me to this day. In the late 1960s my late husband, Merle Pattengill, was a doctoral student in Don Bunker's group. Merle told me that Sherry Rowland saved his life by rescuing him from a rip tide current in which he was caught. I believe it was the occasion of a UC Irvine Chemistry Department picnic at the beach. Anyway, from what I have read about your husband's considerable achievements in science, he was also a wonderful human being. With my sympathy, Sincerely,
Gene and Phyllis Likens

We send our deepest condolences to Joan, Ingrid and Jeffrey. We were deeply saddened with the news of Sherry's death. This caused us to reflect on many wonderful times together, from baseball stories to fighting the 'Merchants of Doubt', to wonderful dinners together. Our sincerest condolences and love to you.

Thank you Prof. Rowland for the courage and bravery it took to go against popular belief and never compromise your integrity by backing down. You put a fire in me and a whole generation of new scientists.
