CHESHIRE- Fanqing Guo, 53, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Birong Su and the father of Yaya and Jason Guo. In addition to his wife and children, Dr. Guo is survived by his mother Jiaying Fang; his siblings, Songqing Guo, Jine Guo, and Cuie Guo; and his nephews Changtai Guo, Huan He, Le He; and niece Yu Liu. He was predeceased by his father Qixiao Guo.

Dr. Guo was a first-generation immigrant who not only realized the fullness of the American dream but also made impactful contributions to biomedical science, patient care, and the greater New Haven community. He was born on October 15, 1969, in Hubei, China and received a B.S. degree from Fudan University (Shanghai) in 1991, an M.S. degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Beijing) in 1994, and worked as a young research fellow in the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, before moving to the U.S. in 1997 to pursue his Ph.D. study in nuclear chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduation in 2004, he spent three years at University of California Davis Medical Center as a resident trainee specializing in the application of medical physics in radiation oncology. He joined Yale New Haven Hospital in 2007 as a clinical medical physicist and was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Therapeutic Radiology as an Assistant Professor in 2008.

Dr. Guo’s professional activities at Yale focused on patient care, teaching, and clinical research. He was an integral part of the multidisciplinary radiation oncology team for the care of cancer patients at Smilow Cancer Hospital. As a member of the Yale Community for nearly sixteen years, Dr. Guo was widely recognized as a dedicated and compassionate clinical medical physicist, mentor, and a researcher who devoted his time and energy to advancing radiation therapy and the treatment of cancer patients. Most importantly, he was a great colleague - humble, friendly, hardworking, and always ready to help whenever needed.

Outside of work, Dr. Guo was an active member of the Southern Connecticut Chinese School (SCCS) and devoted his precious time to developing and managing the language course curriculum for children in the Chinese American community. He co-organized Chinese New Year Gala multiple times including in 2023 and made significant contributions to the growth of next generation Chinese American children in the greater New Haven area.

Dr. Guo was an amazing father and husband. He was well known for his skill in the kitchen and loved to cook, both for everyday dinner and for big gatherings of friends. He always drove his children to their various activities, and learned how to figure skate alongside his daughter because he was bored of waiting for her lessons to finish. He  would often take his family for weekend skating, skiing, and hiking trips. In life, Dr. Guo loved to laugh and tell witty jokes. He will be fondly remembered for the way he would love to dance – often dragging others onto the dance floor if they needed the extra push.

Dr. Guo will be deeply missed by his loved ones, colleagues, and patients. He will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and outstanding contributions to biomedical science and patient care.

Arrangements – Visitation and services will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2023, from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main Street. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow at Grace Baptist Church of Cheshire, 55 Country Club Rd.

To the Guo family,
I was so sorry to hear of the unexpected passing of Fanqing recently. I had both children, Yaya and Jason as art students at Norton School and was always impressed by their discipline, talent and ambition. I am humbled to read what an accomplished and smart person their dad was and pray for comfort and peace for all.

With great sadness, I offer condolences on the loss of Fanqing Guo. He joined UC Davis shortly after I did and, under the guidance of Robin Stern, proved to be an excellent trainee. He was always hard-working, diligent, and committed to clinical practice. Fanquing joined UC Davis during a time of new equipment replacement and his dedication and work ethic helped bring those machines into service. Since graduation, he has become a respected member of the medical physics community, his loss is deeply felt. On behalf of the Department of Radiation Oncology at UC Davis, and in particular the physics faculty, we wish his family comfort in the knowledge that Fanqing made a difference in the lives of others through his dedication to medical physics.

I am deeply sorry to hear the sad news firstly from the social media of north American Chinese medical physicists. I have worked with Fanqing for three years at UC Davis. We drove a truck loaded with the large water tank to cover the annual QA at a cancer center at Merced and we worked together many late evenings on the 2nd generation of Hi-art Tomotherapy unit. We eat buffet together and I was impressed by how much Fanqing ate, Fanqing joked with me that his stomach was expanded at his childhood. I met Birong and Yaya at UC Berkelay dormitory. I visited the UC Berkeley national lab where Fanqing worked. As a first generation immigrant, Fanqing worked hard to get his family and children a better position. He also organized a biostatistical session at AAPM annual meeting. He has done his best with his maximum capacity at work and life. My deep condolences go to Fanqing's wife, children and his mother.

My condolences to Dr. Guo's family, friends and colleagues. I have met Dr. Guo several times over the years at medical physics conferences, and he was a valued colleague. As the current residency director at UC Davis, it was joyful to see how Dr. Guo developed successfully from a trainee to a respected, experienced clinician and researcher. He will be missed.
