Fleming Jones Jr.

The son of the late Fleming Jones, Sr. and Marie Jones, of Florida. Fleming Jones, Jr. was born in Wewahitchka, Florida on March 26, 1928. He departed this life on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, New Jersey. Fleming Jones, Jr. completed his elementary education in the Florida Public School system. He joined the church at an early age and was baptized in Florida. The family later moved to Newark, NJ. He completed his secondary education in the Newark Public School system; he graduated from South Side High School with honors. He attended Rutgers University of Newark and received a bachelors degree in accounting. Fleming Jones, Jr. was employed by the City of Newark for thirty-six years. He was the first African American Comptroller of a major city, and he later served as Financial Director for the City of Newark. Shortly after his appointment with the city of Newark he started his own accounting firm. He provided accounting services for Local 1233, International Longshoremens Association Union for forty-eight years. Fleming Jones, Jr. was a devoted family man; he encouraged his family to excel and supported their dreams. He was hard working and dedicated to providing excellent financial services to all of his clients, family and friends. Work was not his only passion Fleming Jones, Jr. was an avid bowler; he participated in several local leagues. He also played softball in numerous local leagues. He played the saxophone from an early age. He was an enthusiastic reader; a bookworm and he enjoyed books on every subject matter. Fleming Jones Jr. leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Hazel Colter Jones; his children, Johnelle Jones and Fleming Jones III predeceased him. Henderson and Brenda Richardson (Willie); brothers-in-law, Harold Wright and Jonnie Wright (Helen); and a host of other family and friends.
