Death Notice

Floyd Gene Abercrombie

1945 - 2023

Floyd Gene Abercrombie, of Salina, passed away on December 9, 2023, at the Claremore skilled nursing facility. Floyd was 78 years old and was born in Noel, Missouri, on May 7, 1945. Floyd was a lifelong truck driver, an owner operator who drove coast to coast before his retirement. He served in the Army at Homestead Air Force in Florida during the Vietnam War.
Floyd was a dreamer, could strike up a conversation with anyone and was a great storyteller. He made sure his kids and grandkids knew how to work on cars, fix a flat, drive a standard transmission and on occasion taught them how to drive a semi-truck. In 1975 he earned a private pilot's license and a commercial pilot license that were his pride and joy. He didn't finish high school but got his GED thanks to the U.S. Army and was so proud of his late wife Nancy for getting her college degree in 1994.
Floyd was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Abercrombie, his mother, Ella Ruth Franks; his father, Jim Franks; his brother, Dean Franks; his grandson, Lincoln Alexander Williams of Tulsa; his grandson Carl Brandon Coats of Tahlequah and his son, Floyd David Abercrombie of Florida.
He is survived by his brother David Abercrombie and his wife Marilyn of Neosho, Missouri; his daughters, Lisa Williams, and her husband Carey, of Tulsa, Barbara Abercrombie, and her wife Tery DeShong, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Amy Mertz and her husband Paul of Spavinaw. Floyd is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Ashton Williams of Tulsa; Tyler Williams of Tulsa; Joshua Coats of Fairbanks, Alaska; Jacob Abercrombie of Tulsa, Steven Abercrombie of Tulsa, and Katie Abercrombie of Tulsa; numerous nieces and nephews and 9 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Abercrombie Family Scholarship, set up at Northeastern State University for first generation college students. Donations can be made to "The NSU Foundation" with "Abercrombie Family Scholarship donation" indicated in the memo, and mailed to 600 N. Grand Ave., Tahlequah, OK 74464.
A private graveside internment will be held at the Spavinaw-Strang Cemetery at a future date.
