Our dear Mother/Meema, Frances Ellen Kearney (née Serpone), sadly passed away on January 25, 2025 at age 75 after a courageous battle with sudden onset pancreatic cancer. She was born on August 19, 1949 in Bronx, New York, to Charles and Gemma Serpone.
Frances grew up in Bronx, NY and attended Mother Cabrini High School, where she graduated in 1967. She graduated from the Lehman College and started her career as a teacher in New York City. She enjoyed her time with the children and often reminisced about taking students on field trips and riding the NYC subway with them. In 1977, Frances moved to
Pearl River, New York to start her family. Frances shifted her career and entered Civil Service as a Probation Officer for the County of Rockland, New York. She had a kind heart and led with positive motivation. Upon retirement, Frances moved to Westbrook, Connecticut where she resided for the past 14 years. While in Connecticut she volunteered at The Kate Theater and worked at HomeGoods and Kohls.
Frances was creative, artistic and a talented photographer. She often went for walks at the beach and took beautiful, scenic photos. She enjoyed watching sports, especially basketball, and was always excited to watch her favorite player, Caitlin Clarke. Frances loved cheering for her grandchildren at their sporting events, concerts, and dance competitions. She would actively participate in backyard sports with them and make frequent trips to the playground. She was the master of braided pigtails, locating the perfect bow, and finding the best outfits (including shoes) for all her grandchildren. Her dog Mambo and her granddogs Shea and Tux were always spoiled with walks, hugs, and home cooked meals. She cared for all animals and often donated items to the Connecticut Humane Society. Frances found joy in traveling and embraced new experiences. Frances enjoyed going to the Elks, Old Saybrook Estuary, and participated in many programs offered in her town of Westbrook.
Frances was a wonderful mother who was always there, offering support, wisdom, and love in abundance. A friend to many, she was a cherished member of her community, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and strength. Frances was a special lady who had a genuine interest in getting to know people and made new friends everywhere she went. Her inviting, bright and sunny smile lit up everyone's day. Frances had an incredible zest for life and sense of humor. She wanted everyone to have fun and enjoy all life has to offer. Frances loved spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her daughters, Carla Citarella (husband Brett) and Theresa Vozzolo (husband Emilio); and five beautiful grandchildren who loved their Meema so much; Kyle Citarella, Alexa Citarella, Gemma Vozzolo, Luciano Vozzolo, Giuliana Vozzolo, along with countless cousins, relatives and friends who felt her warmth and generosity.
