Frank Markoe Obituary

Published by Aycock Funeral Home Young & Prill Chapel on Apr. 25, 2012.
Frank Markoe, Jr., beloved father of Andrée Markoe Caldwell and Ritchie Markoe Scribner, died peacefully at home on Jupiter Island, Florida, on April 25. He was born September 5, 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945, he graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1947 and from the University of Maryland Law School in 1950. A partner in the Baltimore firm of Cable & McDaniel, he practiced law from 1950 to 1955. From 1955 to 1958 he served as general counsel and director of the Emerson Drug Company in Baltimore. After overseeing its merger into the Warner-Lambert Company, he was recruited by its chairman Elmer Bobst to be general counsel to the pharmaceutical conglomerate, where he later became executive vice-president and vice chairman of the board. Having moved with his two young daughters to Far Hills, he was active in New Jersey civic life and politics and served as president of the New Jersey Ballet. In 1977 President Carter appointed him to the Board of International Broadcasting (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty). Upon retiring from Warner-Lambert, in 1981 he embarked on a second career in hospital administration and was named executive director and vice chairman of the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where he oversaw its development and building campaigns during the 1980s. In 1990 he retired and moved to Jupiter Island, Florida, where he devoted his final years to his family, friends, and golf, and scored two holes-in-one. In addition to his two daughters, he is survived by three grandsons, Charles Scribner IV, William McCormack Caldwell, and Christopher Markoe Scribner, and a recent great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Blair Scribner. Memorial service at St. James' Church, Madison Avenue at 71st Street, New York City, on Friday, June 1st at eleven a.m.
