Colonel Fred Wenderoth Boynton

COLUMBIA Graveside service for Col. Fred W. Boynton, 91, will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, from 1 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the graveside service. Col. Boynton died on Friday, October 21, 2011. Born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on April 29, 1920, he was the son of the late Samuel M. Boynton and Emily W. Boynton. His father died when he was 12 years old and he and his mother lived with his grandmother in Atlanta for a while and then moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma. He attended Oklahoma Military Academy and The Citadel. In 1943, his entire Citadel class was drafted and he began a distinguished 28 year career in the Army. He served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and won many medals. He retired at Ft. Jackson in 1971. In 1972, he began to work for the S.C. Commission on Higher Education, from which he retired in 2002. Col. Boynton is survived by his wife, Patsy Boynton; a daughter, Jeanne C. Boynton of Mt. Pleasant; son, Frederick G. Boynton of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter, Tanya Venable (Derek) of Acworth, Georgia; son, James Franklin of Columbia; three granddaughters, Emily, Charlotte and Susan Boynton; one grandson, Seth Venable; niece, Melissa Gault; and nephew, Cory Gault. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bea N. Boynton. Thanks to John Krause for being the best friend to Fred. Thanks Fred for all the good times and for all the memories. We will have them forever. He loved his two dachshunds, Sadie and Lucy, old westerns, especially John Wayne, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Waffle House and CHOCOLATE. He was a sweet, soft-spoken, kind man. Thanks dad, you will be greatly missed. You were the best.
