Fred Cole Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home - Augusta on Feb. 11, 2026.
Fred Alander Cole, 93, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, with his loving family by his side. Fred was born on October 6, 1932, the son of Albert and Hazel (Hopkins) Cole. He grew up in Mount Vernon, Maine, rooted in the values of service, hard work, and community that guided him throughout his long and meaningful life.

Fred graduated from Farmington High School and then served his country in the United States Army, a commitment that reflected his deep respect for service. He then went on to earn his degree in Accounting from the University of Maine, Portland. He worked at the Boys Training Center and Baxter School for the Deaf, and later served the State of Maine for more than 25 years as Director of Pupil Transportation and Driver Education for the Department of Education. His work touched countless lives across the state.

On February 27, 1960, Fred married the love of his life, Alice Henderson Cole, beginning a devoted partnership and family that spanned decades and was marked by love, loyalty, and shared purpose.

A lifelong Mason, Fred was a member of Vernon Valley Lodge #99 in Mount Vernon for over 68 years, a testament to his integrity, fellowship, and commitment to community. He also served as Treasurer for several organizations, generously offering his time, trustworthiness, and steady leadership.

Fred also worked with Disabled American Veterans at Togus, where he volunteered for sixteen years. During that time, Fred drove more than 100,000 miles across Maine, ensuring disabled veterans could get to their medical appointments-never seeking recognition, only wanting to help.

In his free time, Fred found joy in the outdoors. He loved snowmobiling and riding his motorcycle, pursuits that reflected his adventurous spirit and appreciation for Maine's beauty.

Fred is predeceased by his parents Hazel and Albert Cole, brother Albert Cole Jr., half brother Herman Cole, and his great grandson Corbin Ricker. He is survived by his wife Alice Cole, his children Julie Mecham and her husband Lynn, Wendy Cole Goodwin and her husband Ron, Chris Cole and his wife Suzanne; grandchildren Amanda Post, Katrina Dorson, Lexi Cole, and Graham Goodwin; great grandchildren Mason Ricker and Logan Post.

Fred will be remembered for his quiet generosity, unwavering sense of responsibility, and the many ways he gave back to his family, his community, and his state. His legacy of service, kindness, and dedication will live on in all who knew and loved him.

His family would like to thank everyone at the Togus VA Medical Center for his excellent care. A small private service will be held at the Robinson Cemetery in Mount Vernon, ME in the spring.
