Fred H. Dunkle, Sr., 91, passed on to his Savior in heaven September 24, 2025, to join his family and friends that passed before him. He had been in Mercy House of Chambersburg only a short time until passing. Fred is survived by his loving wife and caretaker of 69 years, Audrey (Simpson) Dunkle. They were married November 26, 1955.
Born May 27, 1934, Frederick Harrison Dunkle, was a son of the late David H. and Keturah (Seibert) Dunkle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Norman Varner and George W. Dunkle, sister-in-law, Dorothy Dunkle, nephew, Kenneth Dunkle, father-in-law, Walter Simpson and mother-in-law, Luretta Miller Rice Simpson.
Fred lived in Spring Run all of his life and did not stray far, except for a few family vacations to the beach, and a hunting trip to Colorado with his son and sons-in-law.
He enlisted in the US Army Reserves during the Vietnam War time and was honorably discharged after serving 11 years from 1954 through 1965. He was a member of the American Legion Post 232, Dry Run and long time member of the Fannett-Metal Rod & Gun Club. Fred was a hard worker and as a young man worked heavy equipment and construction jobs, including the Derose Mobile Home Building Company. Later he worked for PennDot as a paver operator, snowplow operator and later as a highway foreman for several years. He retired after 23 years as a Tunnel Guard for the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Fred and Audrey always had a large garden and raised poultry, pork and beef, as well as hunting wild game to ensure his family had plenty to eat. His hobbies included woodworking where he made picnic tables, toy boxes, blanket chests, puzzles and peach seed trinkets and rings for family and friends. Years ago, he coached little league and T-ball for the Amberson teams. He enjoyed fishing but looked forward to deer and bear hunting with his son, sons-in-law, nephews and friends at various cabins in northern Pennsylvania and Black Moshannon Forests and Game Lands. He and Audrey took camping trips to Black Moshannon where they fished and enjoyed wildlife. Fred loved to tell stories of the good times during his employment, hunting and fishing trips and times with his children and grandchildren.
He enjoyed attending Carrick Community Church, formerly Carrick United Methodist. As hishealth declined, he was no longer able to attend and missed the fellowship.
Along with his beloved wife, Audrey, he was the proud and appreciative father of daughters Cynthia Taylor (Larry), Susan Hockenberry (Gene) and Sandra Bloom, all of Spring Run and his son, Fred Dunkle Jr. (Lori) of Bedford, PA. Fred was the proud grandfather of Denise Cornelious (Phil), Lance Taylor (Amber), Samantha Hockenberry, Alyssa Kratz (Cait), Kenny Bloom (Courtney), Delora Bloom, Troy Dunkle and Tyler Dunkle. Great grandchildren include Riley Cornelious, Madi Cornelious, Landon Edmunds and Eloise Bloom.
Fred would want family and friends to honor him by enjoying time with your family, taking your children and grandchildren fishing and hunting, enjoying the outdoors or planting a garden with your family.
A Celebration of his Life with Military Honors will be held October 4 at 11 AM in Carrick Community Church, 7003 Path Valley Road, Fort Loudon, PA 17224. The family will receive friends at the church after 10 AM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Fred are preferred to Carrick Community Church, address above. www.agettlakjer.com
