Freddie Nathaniel Oates, Sr., 93, of Neptune City, NJ passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, NJ. Freddie was on born October 5, 1928 in Alachua, FL. to the late Willie Oates and Pastola Smith.
He attended grade school through high school at Alachua County Training School, Alachua, FL. Upon high school graduation in May 1946, he attended Florida A&M University located in Tallahassee, FL. While at Florida A&M, he was drafted into the US Army in 1951. After serving his Country for two years, he was honorably discharged in 1953.
Freddie (Fred) fathered two children, one in 1946, a son, Lewis, and in 1948, and a daughter, Amie. In 1954 he married Audrey Smith (Asbury Park, NJ) in Neptune, NJ. To this union five sons were born, Fred Jr (1955), Derek (1956), Edwin (1957), Charles (1960) and Duane (1963).
Freddie was an Entrepreneur in Facilities Maintenance business. He was employed by Neptune Township Board of Education as a Building Engineer where he spent a good portion of his employment years until his retirement at Green Grove Elementary School.
He was a long-time member of St. Stephen AME Zion Church, Asbury Park, NJ. and served with the Men's Usher Board. Freddie held other church leadership positions and was a faithful member in his church. He was an active participant with the Boy Scouts of American in Neptune Township local Troop. He participated with local troop 95 for many years. In 1988 Freddie became a member of the Grand Masonic Lodge. In 2005, the City of Asbury Park, NJ issued Freddie a Proclamation for his exemplary and dedicated service within the community. He was a strong advocate of education and sports with golf being his personal pastime favorite, but never finding enough time for himself. Freddie worked and lived in Neptune, NJ from 1954 until his death.
Freddie was predeceased by his ex-wife, Audrey Smith Oates, mother, Pastola Smith, son, Lewis Oates, brother, Reginald K. Smith, sister, Priscilla Hickmon, and niece, Valerie Caldwell.
He is survived by his daughter, Amie Williams of Atlanta, GA and five sons, Fred N Oates, Jr of Neptune NJ, Derek B Oates of Glenn Burnie, MD, Edwin C Oates of Glenn Burnie, MD, Charles I Oates (Shellie) of Neptune, NJ, and Duane W Oates (Gail) of Greenbelt, MD, two brothers, Willie Peterson (Jackie) and Jamil AlRazi, sister, Cassandra Roberts, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and close friends.
