Fred Uchima Obituary

Fred Yasumasa Uchima, born January 3, 1930 in Ewa, Hawaii, deceased November 28, 2022. Beloved husband of Dana Maclean Uchima for 38 wonderful years. Loving father of Michael Uchima and his wife Eileen Uchima (nee Sargent), David Uchima and his wife Frances (nee Smith); loving grandfather of Heather Uchima, Ryan Uchima, Kayli Uchima, and several step-grandsons; loving uncle to many nieces and nephews in Hawaii and on the mainland; loving brother of Charlotte, Sue, and the late Marion, Roy, Katherine, David, Dixie, and Jessie. Beloved son of the late Anshio and Kamato Kina. Fond brother-in-law of the late Graham Maclean and loving uncle of Bridgette Gallas. Fred was a military veteran, stationed in Germany during the Korean War where he attained the rank of Sergeant. After returning from his military services, he married the late Doris Fumiko Uchima (nee Suzumoto). Fred was employed at Northrop Grumman in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, from 1960 until his retirement in December of 1994. In retirement, he enjoyed gardening, playing tennis, tinkering in his workshop, travelling, and periodically returning to Hawaii to visit our many relatives. Fred resided with his wife Dana on the northwest side community of Galewood for 30 years before moving to the Brookdale Lakeview Retirement Community in 2015. His family would like to thank the assisted living personnel and Brookdale Hospice for the loving care he received at the end of his life. Fred's cremains will be interred at the columbarium at Punchbowl National Cemetery in Hawaii with full military honors next summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Fred's name to the Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131, the Japanese American Service Committee, 4427 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60640 or the Michiana Humane Society, 722 Indiana Hwy 212, Michigan City, IN 46360.
