Freddie Mae "King" Powell

Freddie Powell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Tommy E. Taylor Funeral Home on Jan. 12, 2026.
Freddie Mae King was the sixth child born to Velma Lemons King and Richard King on February 25, 1953, in Oakland, Colorado County, Texas. She received her early education at Karl Downs Colored School and later attended Weimar High School following integration.

Freddie Mae was the proud mother of four children and later met and married Milton Powell. She was a faithful member of Greater Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. For 34 years, she worked diligently at Parkview Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation in Weimar until declining health led to her retirement. Freddie Mae was a joy to be around and truly never met a stranger. She was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever she could. She enjoyed cooking, listening to the blues, and dancing.

Affectionately known as "Granny" to many family members and friends, Freddie Mae cherished sitting outside and warmly welcomed everyone who stopped by to visit her.

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Freddie Mae peacefully answered God's call, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren. She was graciously called home to receive her eternal rest and to dwell forever with her Heavenly Father.

Freddie Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Powell; her parents, Velma Lemons and Richard King; two sisters, Willie Elma King and Georgia Love; four brothers, Paul King, Lloyd King, Melvin King, and Marvin Lemons; and one great-grandson, DaKarien Evans.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories her four children, LaShawn King, Mark King, Angela King, and Eddie King, all of Weimar, Texas; eleven grandchildren-Aaron, Ken, Tra' Michael, Kimara, Mar' Keshia, Ky' Angela, La Darius, Deja, Demarcus, Cinvandra, and Eddie Jr.; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by one sister, Marilyn Hardaway; sister-in-law, Marian Lemons, one brother, Richard King Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; Tammie Wicks, whom she loved dearly as a daughter; special friends of over 40 years, Sharon Burley and Gracie Moore; devoted caregivers Raven Johnson, Lisa Jarmon, and Teketria Hayes; and a special nurse with whom she shared a close bond, Amanda Davis. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
