Freddie James Simpson, 28, of Churubusco, died unexpectedly of natural causes at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2025, at his home.

Born on December 24, 1996, in Lexington, Kentucky, he was the only child of Freddie Lee Simpson and Mandy Mae Collinsworth. Growing up in Wallins Creek, KY, he graduated from Harlan County High School in 2016.

Moving to Churubusco in 2018, he went to work for Lassus Handy Dandy in Churubusco.

As Kentucky was his home, he liked to make visits, listen to old-fashioned country music, and talk about the famed Chained Rock that protects the town of Pineville, KY, which is now a State Park. He enjoyed shooting sports whenever possible and was an avid gamer. He often played the video games Elden Ring, Grand Theft Auto, and Dark Souls. Getting to know the local police officers, he assisted them with the annual Shop-With-A-Cop program and their fundraising efforts.

Surviving are his mother, Mandy Collinsworth of Columbia City; grandmother, Beverly Johnson of Churubusco; aunts, Sherri Long of Pierceton, Nikki Johnson (Leon Borden) of Martinsville, Dea Dea (Corey) Gipson of Huntington, Tracey Collinsworth of Kimmell, Barbara Simpson of Harland, KY and Mary Simpson of Wallins Creek, KY; uncles, Curt Collinsworth of Albion, and Brent Collinsworth of Pierceton; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Freddie Lee Simpson.

The funeral service is 1 p.m. Friday (Oct 31st) at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial is at the Christian Chapel Cemetery at Merriam. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the service Friday at the funeral home.
