Frederic Aubyn Obituary

Frederic Chase St. Aubyn, Ph.D., Professor of French, Emeritus, 82, of 200 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden, CT passed away April 30, 2004 after a brief illness. He was born in Russell, KS, Sept. 30, 1921 a son of the late Ernest L. & Beulah Chase St. Aubyn, and graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in 1942. After three years service in the Pacific during WW II, he received his M.A. and Ph.D from Yale University. He taught at State Univ. of NY, the Univ. of Delaware, Elmira NY College and finally the Univ. of Pittsburgh, from which he retired in 1986. In 1963 Frederic taught in the Peace Corps program during the summer at Oberlin College. He has published scholarly works on the French poets Mallarme, Rimbaud and Peguy and with a colleague two French textbooks. During his career he has published over 50 articles and 160 book reviews. Among his numerous honors he counts the Catharine McGraw Rock Award1964 & 69 and a SMSU Outstanding Alumnus Award 1976; and in 1986 the French government named him a Chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes Academiques. Mr. St. Aubyn is survived by several nieces and nephews and was predeceased by two sisters Phyllis Peterson and Barbara Dooly.
