Frederick Cummings Obituary
Frederick Walrath Cummings Jr., born on May 2, 1943, in Washington, D.C., entered the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 8, 2025, at his home in Alta Vista, Kansas.
Fred is lovingly remembered by his children: Lisa Cummings (Tim W.) of Hope, Maine; Joshua Cummings of Wheat Ridge, Colorado; Frederick D. Cummings (Jacqueline Cummings) of Alta Vista, Kansas; and Kate E. Archer (Derek Archer) of Athens, Tennessee. He was a devoted grandfather to Frederick Lee Cummings, Emmeline G. Cummings, Oliver L. Cummings, Kinsley Archer, and Grayson Archer. Fred was formerly married to Julie A. Cummings of Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
Fred spent his early years in rural upstate New York, where he enjoyed rowing a handmade scow along the Erie Canal and spending summers on his grandfather's dairy farm near Menomonee, Wisconsin. After graduating from Pittsford High School in New York in 1961, he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont.
The Air National Guard brought Fred to Colorado, where he made his home for 55 years and raised his family. His diverse career included supervising a can manufacturing line at the renowned brewery in Golden, steel framing buildings in the Denver Tech Center, running a successful landscaping business in Longmont, and driving millions of miles as an over-the-road trucker. Yet his true calling was as a school bus driver on the Golden Gate Canyon route for 25 years-a role that blended his love for children with his passion for big diesel engines. He retired in 2020 at the age of 76.
In retirement, Fred moved to Alta Vista, Kansas, where he found joy in spending time with his grandchildren-watching them learn, fish, play ball, and grow in the Lord.
Fred's legacy of hard work and love for children will live on through those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort and peace to all who mourn his passing.
