Frederick Edwards Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memories Funeral Home - Rochester on Feb. 18, 2026.
Frederick Tyrone Edwards, known to most as Freddie G, was born on June 19, 1962, in Bainbridge, GA, to Nathan Edwards JR. and the late Marion Yvonne Edwards. He was the second oldest of four children. From a young age, he displayed a vibrant spirit, a kind heart, and a natural ability to bring joy to those around him. Whether it was his infectious character, his caring nature, or his ability to turn any moment into a cherished memory, he was a gift to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Freddie attended James Madison High School in Rochester, NY, where he graduated in 1981. He went on to pursue a career in the U.S. military as a combat engineer and a light wheel vehicle mechanic. After returning home from the service, he pursued a career in roofing with his father, Nathan Edwards Jr. Throughout his life, he worked various jobs and remained dedicated and hardworking in all that he did.

Freddie had a deep love for old school hip hop, vibing to artists like Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., and Run D.M.C. The music was more than just sound. It was energy, memories, and moments shared with family and friends. You could always tell when one of his favorite songs came on because the mood instantly lifted. He loved football season, the excitement, the debates, the cheers at the TV, and the shared laughs. He also respected the discipline of martial arts, valuing the focus, balance, and strength it represented, qualities he passed down to his children not just through words, but by example. At heart, he was a collector and loved baseball cards. He also took pride in building model cars, carefully crafting each piece with patience and attention to detail.

As a Veteran, he served his country for more than four years with courage, strength, and honor. That chapter of his life reflected his deep sense of loyalty and commitment. He understood sacrifice. He understood duty. Beyond the uniform was a man with a big heart, a free spirit, and a love for living that could not be contained.

Freddie was a dedicated husband who loved his wife wholeheartedly. Their bond was built on love, partnership, laughter, and shared memories. He valued family above all else and worked hard to provide not just a home, but a life filled with experiences and joy. On May 27, 1984, he met the love of his life, Barbara L. Edwards. They came into matrimony on July 16, 1988, and to this union they had four children: Quinton T. Edwards, Yvonne L. Edwards, Kwahmane T. Edwards, and Schnya K. Edwards.

As a young child, he was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church but was a member of Mt. Olive M.B Church under the leadership of Reverend Douglas Smith SR.

On February 6, 2026, Freddie's life was tragically taken away by a hit and run driver. He was predeceased by his mother, Marion Yvonne Edwards; Rosa Lynnette Edwards sister; Nathan Edwards III brother; George Rufus Miller's brother-in-law; Deloris Lee sister-in-law; and Maethonia Scott sister-in-law.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his wife of 38 years, Barbara Edwards, with whom he shared 42 years of life; his children Quinton Edwards from PA, Yvonne Edwards, Kwahmane Edwards, and Schnya Edwards, all from Rochester, NY; his father Nathan Edwards JR. Hattie; his sister Sonjia Edwards; his grandkids Ya'Nerhi Wesley, Lyriq Bell, Salik Butler JR., Kelysse Butler, and Bel'a Rose Butler; his brothers in law James Dickerson Naeomi, Ordell Dickerson Tannices, and Tony Dickerson; his adopted siblings Dwight Edwards and Ciara Edwards; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins and friends.

His spirit will forever live on in every shared story, every echo of his laughter, and every act of love inspired by his example. We will forever carry him in our hearts.
