Frederick Joseph Herman, 93, longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, October 19, 2024 at Trillium Hospice House, Marquette, under the care of his loving family and UP Home Health & Hospice.
Fred was born October 28, 1930 in Ishpeming to John and Mary (Liquia) Herman, and graduated from St. Paul High School, Class of 1949, where he excelled in basketball. Post retirement he also worked part time for Spear & Sons in Marquette.
Mr. Herman was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing pinochle and cribbage, being at the family camp on Crooked Lake, and was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers. In his younger years, he actively played in the local men's softball and basketball leagues. Fred and his beloved wife, Doris enjoyed wintering in Clearwater, FL, where they played shuffleboard. Above all, he adored his grandchildren, and following them in all their extracurricular activities.
Surviving are his daughter, Susan (Clyde) Nyman of Ishpeming; a son, Steven (Julie) Herman of Negaunee; his grandchildren: Chelsea (Chris) Ullmer, Kathy (Brad) Gischia, Jesse (Rio Zoch) Herman, Jake (Kerri Spencer) Foster, Adam Foster, Rory (Christina) Herman, Cailey (Shawn) Kerry, and Andrew Herman; 19 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Sookkyung Herman of Plano, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 Noon on Monday, October 28th, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. The family will greet friends and family from 10:00 AM until the start of Mass at noon at the church on Monday, and also at a luncheon immediately following services in the St. Paul School gymnasium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Fred's memory to the Ishpeming Senior Center.

Jerry Herman

October 30, 2024

My first memories would begin when my Uncle Fred (more like a brother, actually) and I were very young together, as I arrived a few months ahead of him in birth. Over many years we spent great times together-part time at his house, and part time at mine. I would go and watch him play basketball in Negaunee (he was an excellent player), and he would come see me play football in Ishpeming. We always went together with our wives to the U.P. State Fair. Although I moved away after college, we kept talking to each other by phone and on summer visits, including when he was in the Marines and I was in the paratroopers and infantry during the Korean War. I am sure God will welcome him in Heaven, and I will always fondly remember him. Jerry Herman
