Frederick Scribner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brooklawn Funeral Home - Rocky Hill from Nov. 10 to Nov. 13, 2025.
Frederick Clayton Scribner of Old Saybrook, passed away peacefully at home on October 30, 2025.
Born on November 2, 1939, in Quincy, MA to Eleanor (Stanley) and C. Stetson Scribner, Fred grew up in East Hartford with his sister Priscilla and his beloved dog Shadow. He attended East Hartford High School where he met many life-long, cherished friends. He was married to his high school sweetheart Loretta Eisenhardt (predeceased) for 57 years.
Fred proudly served as a sergeant in the US Marine Corps Reserves from 1960-1967. Dedicated to his family, he lived in South Windsor for 39 years where he raised his children in the historic farming district of Old Main Street. For 38 years, Fred worked at Pratt and Whitney as a quality assurance supervisor before retiring to Cornfield Point and St Petersburg, FL.
A great storyteller, Fred loved to socialize, and he was always ready for a chat and a laugh. He charmed everyone who met him with his wit and friendly disposition. Fred had an inspirational upbeat attitude, the ability to fix almost anything and he loved a cup of New England clam chowder!
Never missing his daily push-ups, he was an avid proponent of exercise. Fred liked to keep active and enjoyed track and field, tennis, skiing, cycling and golf (achieving a hole-in-one!). His golf buddies were some of his closest friends. A regular at the CT River Classic for many years, Fred was a nationally-ranked Sunfish sailor.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, home projects, music and art. A talented artist, Fred is well-known for creating a near life-size bronze cast whale tail which is a feature in his yard. He was a WWII history buff and had many memorable adventures traveling the world with Loretta.

He is survived by his three children: Heather, Scott and Stephanie and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fred was a devoted father and grandfather whose stories will never be forgotten.

A private family remembrance will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to: The Estuary Center, 220 Main Street, Old Saybrook CT 06475

Fred was a multi-talented craftsman who recycled wood from the transfer station to make bird houses for the Garden Club. He was a modest sculptor, a fair golfer, a practical vegetable gardener, occasional biker, very proud Marine (Semper Fi!), incessant storyteller ("I probably told you this before, but..."), a caring and supportive partner for Loretta and loving father for his children. He was a very good friend and he made this a better world... and he will be missed.
