Jerrie and Dan -- We are so impressed by the good influence Fred had on so many young lives -- you both can be proud. Our friendship with Fred, Jerrie and Dan were the years we all lived at Bryce Resort in Basye, VA -- golfing, visits in our homes and just enjoying all the fun times and great community spirit of Bryce. Our last visit was a trip to Aiken to spend time at Fred and Jerries new home and environment (and to see some of our other Bryce friends who had moved to Aiken) -- we miss them all. Our hearts go out to both of you during this sad time -- Fred is at peace and we hope all your good memories will help you also find peace. With Love - Don and Dalene

Mr. Shepherd taught me how to drive. I wish he had taught everyone. My brother played football for The Bulldogs and it was that Family that kept him from drugs. Prayers for Family and friends

Coach Shepherd was a great teacher and mentor. I still remember the words ringing in my ear: "Keith, practice doesn´t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." Yep, 50 years later and I still remember. God bless, Coach!

I played for Coach Shepherd in his first three years at Churchill high school not only was he a great coach, but he instilled great work ethics for life itself. He taught me not only the challenge of playing football, but the challenges of life.

Coach Shepherd was an amazing man. He brought us Bulldogs to so many victories! He was my driver´s ed teacher! What a fun class that was with him! I was a Churchill cheerleader in 10th and 11th grade and I witnessed how hard our guys practiced and sweat blood and tears for Coach Shepherd he was our Shepherd and he showed us the way! RIP Coach Shepherd what great football teams we had back then! Thank you for being the leader that you were and influencing so many great young minds

Coach, no words can fully express my appreciation for your support and encouragement while I was exploring the sports medicine field. Although my career took a different path, my high school experience was made richer and memorable as a result.

In the days ahead, may your family, friends and players find peace and comfort in their memories. As for the hearts you touched, the memories you´ve created, and the lives that you inspired, your signature word, as you stepped on the bus, best summarizes your time in the game. "HELLAVAJOB!".

I´m one of the many young men that had the honor to play for Coach Shepherd at Churchill High School. It was in his early years before amassing his tremendous record, but we knew our coach was a special leader. He instilled the will to win, along with integrity and sportsmanship. He was tough, but fair, and certainly not hard-nosed. We all knew he cared about us and wanted us to succeed on the field and in life. Some of his sayings stuck with me for life, such as "just put your head down and get five". Meaning when things get rough, just fight forward and try to end the play with strength and another five yard gain. I wasn´t a running back for Coach Shepherd, but I remembered that message and told myself just that more than a few times in my life. Rest in peace Fred Shepherd and thanks for all you did for so many.

Coach it was a honor to play for you in your program. Your program instilled a work ethic and ability to self challenge myself that has served me well as an adult/husband/father. My favorite phrase will always be "be smarter than the average bear". May you rest in peace. Uman Bakshi 1991

Fred Shepherd allowed me to walk through the team doors and be a part of the manager squad over 5 seasons... this shaped my whole high school experience and taught me about myself and about team work, going into my adult years ....thank you, Coach. You will never be forgotten. - Leah

I want to thank Fred for being the man he was and for being tough on us, he truly cared about the young men he and all the other coaches mentored. I had a chance to be both on the football team as well as the show choir at the same time. Fred took an overweight kid and showed care and concern. I realize that he was looking out for a football team but he was genuinely trying to help me. He had me every morning running the mile before school. To put it simply, thank you! I can't put into words everything but I have nothing but positivity and love for a man who didn't have to care but did.

In addition to the football and Bryce Mountain memories, I want to add the memory of my folks, Hub and Lucy, adoring Fred and spending as much time as they could with him and Jerrie. Fred and Hub, in the Olney basement watching sports comes to mind and a . Well done, Fred, and also to Jerrie, Terri and Dan who made loving, tough decisions as illness came with all its changes over the last years
