Frederick John Silverio, of Winsted, Connecticut a beloved husband, father, uncle, friend, and community member passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2024 at the age of 91. Born to Alfredo "Fred" and Ruth Silverio on May 12, 1933, Fred was raised in Winsted, Connecticut. He loved the town and continued his legacy in Winsted by raising 6 children there as well.
Fred served active duty in the US Air Force from 1957 through 1959 and reserve duty through 1963.
A brilliant engineer who dedicated his 37 year career to aerospace and the development of helicopters as we know today, Fred spent time working at Piasecki Aircraft, Kaman Corporation, and ultimately Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation from where retired to finish out his robust career. He worked on the Black Hawk, Sea Hawk, Apache and Comanche helicopter programs and made his final contribution to the aerospace industry consulting for Westland Helicopters in the UK.
Fred's commitment to the town of Winsted never ceased over the years. Most notably, upon his retirement he became an active member of the Board of Directors for the Winsted Health Center, formerly the Winsted Memorial Hospital, where he worked tirelessly to ensure that Winsted and the surrounding area towns had a local place to go for health care and medical emergencies.
Throughout his life, Fred was an avid sports fan who loved to watch any and all New York Yankees games during baseball season and the New York Giants during the football season. For many years, he enjoyed playing ball at Walker Field with the American Legion team in town. He loved to play golf and shared that love with his kids who play as well. Fred was a man of many great hobbies, not least of which was model airplane building. He would spend hours in his workshop building different historic airplanes many of which he proudly displayed throughout his home. He was an enthusiastic fly-fisherman often found at the Farmington River.
Fred loved Cape Cod and spent over 30 years vacationing and enjoying time in South Yarmouth. Summers were filled with golfing and boating, where Fred always could be found on the water fishing, clamming or assisting in sailing regattas. Off season, Thanksgiving always brought together friends and family celebrations, a tradition still kept today.
His love for his family, including his dogs Tucket and PG Tips (1 & 2), was never unwavering. He was predeceased by his father, mother and sister Shirley Height, as well as his first wife. He is survived by his current wife of 40 years Dianne, his son Fredrick and his wife Margaret (Peggy), his daughter Lisa and husband Luc, his son David and wife Barbara, his daughter Johanna and husband Roi, his son Colin and wife Sarah and his son Bryant along with 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and numerous great-nieces and -nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held in his honor at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 186 Main St. Winsted, CT on January 10, 2025 at 11am, concluding with a graveside burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, 89 Torringford St. Winsted, CT directly following the service. I worked several years with Fred in the Avionics department at Kaman Aircraft in Bloomfield Ct. We both worked for Bob Mack in the Avionics department. At that time, Fred was doing analog computer simulations of Kaman's Hu-2k navy helicopter. We both shared the same room while working in Key West Florida on an anti submarine warfare program in the late 60's. My wife Maxine reminded me that he and his wife attended our wedding.
