He was a very kind and generous man to me as a teacher while I attended Cal State Northridge as a student myself in the early 70s. I definitely learned more from him about life and speaking Armenian while i was an English and Math teacher there at the school than i was able to teach my students. That's the kind of man he was.

In a lot of ways it was also a hoot working there. I remember trying to coach basketball with the students. It was hilarious. No one knew the rules, and worse, no one cared about rules. It was a free-for-all. No matter. Everyone had fun and the whole thing was a welcome break for the students.

Many of his students went on to be very successful in life, which is a testament to his insistence on teaching values and virtues, the American way, while maintaining the Armenian culture and language intact.

As with any pioneer, he faced considerable headwinds, those who cherished the status quo, and who found fear and trepidation in new breakthroughs. But his persistence paid off, and now we honor his legacy in this final farewell.

Gabriel was a doer, not looking to be praised for the great work that he did. He was a very humble man. He was a man of vision, by starting the first Armenian school in the Los Angeles area under very difficult conditions.
