Gail Cornelius, 79. of Cahokia, Illinois, born September 24, 1946 in Jacksonville, Florida, died Monday, February 23, 2026 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Gail was a retired towboat captain from Teco Towing Company in Paducah, KY. He was a a Vietnam War U.S. Navy veteran., where he served as a Quarter Master. He was a member of the Holy Family Milice. Gail was an avid fan of baseball - especially the St. Louis Cardinals. And of course due to his life long occupation he loved being on the water.

Gail was preceded by his parents, Eugene and June, nee Prose, Cornelius; a brother, Danny Cornelius; and two brothers-in-law, Mike Chartrau and Rob Lambert..

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Lynn Cornelius, nee Lambert; his children, Jenni Cornelius of Belleville, IL and Josh (Stephanie) Cornelius of Pacific, MO; a granddaughter, Andria Cornelius; siblings, Carolyn Cornelius of Jefferson City, MO, Joy Chattrau of Washington, MO, Mark (Julia) Cornelius of Belleville, IL, Jim (Sherry) Cornelius of Waterloo, IL and Tina (Alex) Galluzzo of Swansea, IL. sister-in-law, Diane (Jim) Wells of East Carondelet, IL; and very special neighbors, Al and Dicey Bruce and family. He was also a dear uncle, cousin, and friend.

In following Gail's wishes a private cremation was to be held. A Celebration of Life - Gail's "Un-Funeral" will be held at a later date.

Braun Family Funeral Home, Columbia, Illinois was entrusted with the care of Mr. Cornelius.
