Gail Morin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. - Peru on Dec. 14, 2025.
The weeds of the world can finally breathe a sigh of relief as Gail Morin, Master Gardener, has hung up her trowel for the final time after a life spent keeping plants – and people in line. Gail A. Morin, 90, of Peru, died Saturday, December 13, 2025 at the Plattsburgh Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Gail was born in Flushing, NY, August 11, 1935, the daughter of Hugo and Marie (Hauser) vonWalsleben. Gail graduated from Plattsburgh State University with a teaching degree in 1957. She taught at Monty Street Elementary School in Plattsburgh, where she met her husband, Camille Morin.
For decades Gail was a member of the local Ladies Garden Club. She also dedicated numerous years as a volunteer at the Peru Free Library. Honoring her German heritage, Gail was a member of the local German Club. A world traveler, Gail collected passport stamps and explored several countries (Great Britain, Russia, Mongolia, Austria and China to name a few), cultures and cuisines.
Left to cherish her memory are Gail's five daughters, each of whom inherited at least one of her traits: her green thumb, her wanderlust, her love of community and her uncanny humor. Susan Mariano (Michael) of Somersworth, NH, Melanie Morin of Naples, FL, Julie Smuczynski (Mike) of the world in general, Amy Morin of Saranac Lake, NY and Leigh Tyler (Tom Mattila) of Plattsburgh, NY. She also left behind grandchildren Taylor Bezio, Nicholas Mariano, Kelsey, Morgan and Ian Smuczynski, Madison Tyler and Chaz Welker as well as her great grandson, Hayes Smuczynski Short and niece, Jane Bickford.
Gail's family extends a special thank you to John Tyler of Peru, NY for his love, help and support of Gail over the years.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands, Harry B. Thompson in 1959 and Camille Morin 2008 and her brother Ted in 2001.
Honoring Gail's wishes, services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests planting something in her honor; preferably something hardy. Gail did have her standards.
Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru, 518-643-9055.

Gail was a very special friend and we will all miss her very much. I have so many great memories together. We both loved our gardens and each others. We had many great conversations while"digging in the dirt" and also sharing with our " little garden group". I have also had memories of sharing with her family. Our prayers go with you all in this sorrowful time. May God keep you all in his loving arms. Love and God bless. Bev and Ray N.
