Gary "Bear" Barker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, in Irondale, Ohio. Born on August 29, 1955, in East Liverpool, Ohio, Bear lived a full and meaningful life, reaching the age of 69.
Bear was known for his tireless work ethic and practical skills, having dedicated many years to his career in maintenance at Sterling China and as an electrician at Homer Laughlin. His hands-on approach to life made him a true jack-of-all-trades, and those who knew him best would often say, "If he can't fix it, just buy a new one because it can't be fixed."
Outside of work, Bear's heart belonged to his family and friends. He spent countless joyful hours golfing with his son, grandson, and friends, creating memories that will be cherished forever. In his earlier years, he found peace and adventure in boating and fishing. Bear also enjoyed the camaraderie of his regular card games with his "card group," where laughter and friendship were always abundant.
Bear is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Shirley (Russell) Barker; his granddaughter, Carmen Grogg; and his beloved canine companion, Molly. He leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold his memory dear: his devoted wife since 1997, Carol Barker; his son, Paul (Connie) Geisse; his daughters, Nicole Barker (Bradley Estepp) and Jolie Geisse (Bill Fletcher); his brother, Michael Barker; and his sister, Shirley (Robert) Gooding.
He was a proud grandfather to Alissa Geisse (Gordon Botman), Robert Hill (Christa Burgess), Ryan Geisse (Allyssa Buzek), Jonathan Hill, Garrett Grogg, Morgan Grogg, and Charlie Wilson (Lynsey Tray). Bear also delighted in his great-granddaughter, Ellie Glenz, and eagerly anticipated the arrival of his new granddaughter, Lyla Wilson, due in July. He leaves behind his brother-in-law Robert Gooding and his best friend, Rich Shepherd.
Family, friends, and all whose lives Bear touched are invited to celebrate his life at the MacLean Chapel of Care Funeral and Cremation Specialists in Wellsville, Ohio. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The funeral service to honor Bear's life will follow at 4 p.m.
Bear's legacy remains in the hearts of those who loved him and in the many fond memories that will live on. His kindness, skill, and unwavering love will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, Bear's wish was for memorial donations to be made to the Living Well Church in Wellsville. Donations can be made below.
