Gary Cooper, known to many as "Mountain Man" of Harlan, Kentucky, passed away on March 7, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on July 2, 1942, Gary was not just a local figure; he was a tapestry woven from the threads of laughter, kindness, and generosity. From his earliest days, Gary was rooted in the rich tapestry of Harlan, where he embraced life’s simple pleasures and devoted himself to his family and friends.
A US Army veteran, Gary served his country with honor and pride, carrying with him the discipline and camaraderie that military life instills. He later became a steadfast coal truck driver and welder for Nally and Hamilton,
Gary was often seen as a jokester, able to light up a room with his infectious laughter and jovial spirit. He had an unparalleled knack for making every moment a reason for joy. Whether he was haggling at yard sales or helping someone in need, Gary did so with a sparkle in his eye and a heart full of love. His selflessness was legendary; he found profound joy in helping others without expecting anything in return.
His family was his universe and his greatest treasures. He is survived by a Son, Gary Cooper, Jr. and wife Melissa; Daughters, Cynthia Cooper, Valerie Maxaner and Husband Joe, Paula Ricker and Husband Mark and Samantha Cooper. The light in Gary’s life extended beyond his children, as he was graced with 19 Grandchildren and 10 Great-Grandchildren, each one bringing him immense joy and pride, the embodiment of his legacy.
Gary's siblings held a special place in his heart, his dear Brother, James Cooper and dear Sister, Vonna Hamlet. Together, they shared stories, laughter, and a bond that time and distance could never diminish.
Gary is now reunited with his beloved Wife, Carolyn Cooper, whose absence has left an indelible mark upon his heart. He is also preceded in death by his Parents, James and Willa Mae Cooper, who imparted wisdom and love throughout his life.
