Gary Homchick

Gary John Homchick, beloved father and friend, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025 in Monterey, California, at the age of 81. Born and raised in the Raleigh Hills area of Portland, Oregon. He attended Benson Polytechnic High School where he discovered a love of engineering and building.
A proud veteran, he served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1970, where his lifelong love for the ocean was deepened and affirmed. After his service, he was onto new adventures where he and his friend Matt bought, rebuilt, and reinvented Rock Creek Tavern in Hillsboro, Oregon. They transformed it into a beloved gathering place.
Gary always wanted to be on the ocean and he continued to chart a course on the water as a skilled yacht delivery captain, navigating coastlines with expertise and a sailor's heart.
Gary was a man of remarkable hands-on talent. He could build or repair almost anything. From boats to cars to home projects, his precision, creativity, and mechanical insight were evident in all he did. His ingenuity and passion for mechanics extended from the water to the road as he was endlessly fascinated by cars.
Those who knew Gary will remember his love of a good challenge, his dedication to craftsmanship, and the unmistakable passion in his voice whenever he spoke about boats. He found peace on the ocean and fulfillment in working with his hands.
He will be deeply missed by family and friends who loved him.
