Gary Lloyd Knox, 81, of Stafford Springs, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Nov. 2, 2022, at Saint Francis Hospital, Hartford.
He was born in Rumford, Maine, on Aug. 29, 1941. Gary was predeceased by his parents, Mary Maud (Hoar) Knox and Lloyd Linwood Knox of Mexico, Maine; his sister, Floris Robin and husband, Roger Robin of Hanover, Maine; and his sister, Lois Poole and her son, Jeff Poole.
After high school, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Hospital Corpsman during the Vietnam War with an honorable discharge from active duty. He then served in the Naval Reserves, ending his 16-year career as a Chief Petty Officer. Following his service, he worked as a Laboratory Technician for a private lab and then a Laboratory Technician for the State of Connecticut, ending his career as a Laboratory Inspector for the state of Connecticut.
Gary was an avid reader and enjoyed working with computers and was always lending a hand to help others in need. He enjoyed being outdoors, yardwork and gardening. His favorite activities in his younger years included running, tennis, hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, canoeing and scuba diving in tropical water, especially in Aruba. He enjoyed occasional trips to the casino with family and friends and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was so proud of all their accomplishments. Gary also loved the many cats he rescued over the years and his dog, Anson.
Gary is survived by his wife, Susan (Shemansky) Knox; four children, Lisa (Knox) Sagal, her husband, Mikhail Sagal and their two children, Scarlett and Liam Sagal of Wakefield, Rhode Island; Christopher Knox and friend, Elizabeth Gilcrest of Middletown, Rhode Island; Heather Gregory and husband, Steve Gregory of Camano Island, Washington, and their children, Jared Miller and wife, Samantha Miller, and Ethan Gregory, Beth Gonzalez, her partner, Luis Rivera of Willimantic, and their combined families, Jessenia Gonzalez and her partner, Dylan Auger of East Windsor, Jasmine Gonzalez and Jayden Shedrick of Willimantic, Allison Socha, Summer, Chase and Avery Rivera. Gary is also survived by his nephews Mike Robin and partner, Deb Whitney, John Pool and wife, Edith Poole and three children, Amelia, Matthew and Angie. He leaves behind a large extended family and many friends he loved dearly, including a lifelong friend and navy buddy, Gary Godin of East Hartford. Gary was a friend to all and will be deeply missed by family, friends and those fortunate enough to cross his path.
