Gary Francis Kurutz

Gary sat in the desk in front of me in high school. Always easy to talk to and always a good guy. He sure did well in the profession that he loved. Rest in peace, Gary.

Gary was my literary hero. We bonded over author Jack London, and then a proposal for the garden in front of his library. He was so generous and encouraging. A gentle, lovely man, greatly missed.

It was a great honor to have worked with him on several history projects on the American West and to have known him as a friend too.
Rest in peace, Gary.

The news of the loss of our dear and beloved friend, Gary Francis Kurutz came as a shock wave to our family. Gary was a remarkable human being, a gentle soul, and a great friend to our family whose smile lights up the room. As we write this tribute to bid farewell to this great man, we will carry the laughter, joy and love you brought into our lives. You may have physically gone, but your memory will remain in our hearts. May your gentle soul rest in peace. KD & family, you will remain in our prayers

The history of the American West in publishing is more well known thanks to Gary´s research, collecting and teaching. His enthusiasm inspired many of us librarians to learn more about the topic. I will remember him always as a warm, enthusiastic and encouraging teacher, and the class I took from him in California Rare Book School is memorable many years later. RIP Gary, and keep on teaching the angels. KD, I wish you peace and strength at this sad time.

Gary was not only an expert on California history, but also one of the kindest people I had the good fortune to know. He helped me so much in my career and the incredible work he did with the California Historical Society collection continues to help us to this day. I am grateful for the many wonderful memories.

Gary was a steady hand when I led the Sacramento History Online project and I had been in touch with him in the past few months. I am so sorry to get this news, thank you for everything I learned from you.
