Gary LaTorrey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Savage-DeMarco Funeral Service - Binghamton on Jan. 20, 2026.
Gary L. LaTorrey, age 69, closed his eyes in sleep on January 16, 2026, after a brief illness. Gary is survived by; his devoted wife of 42 years, Diane M. (Clark) LaTorrey. He is also survived by; his loving daughter, Kristina Johnson; grandson, Nicholas Johnson; and Nick's father, Larry Johnson. He is also survived by his sister, Debbie LaTorrey; brother, Mark LaTorrey; mother-in-law, Louise Clark; sister-in-law, Linda Potenzino; brothers-in-law, John Clark and Tommy Clark, as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews and a large spiritual family.

Gary was employed at Lesko Financial Services since 1995. Over the years, he went from once being known as the "disco king" to being known as the "403B Guy," helping countless school district employees prepare for retirement. Gary established many meaningful relationships with his clients, many of whom became close friends.

On July 7, 1984, Gary was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and became an active member of the Vestal NY congregation. He took great joy in volunteering his time to share the Bible's hopeful message for the future, cooking and feeding those working on building projects and being a part of a large spiritual family. Gary had a deep love for people and was committed to sharing God's promises, particularly the hope of resurrection. He had a rare ability to connect with anyone, no matter where he was or what he was doing. Gary was well known for his corny jokes and took great pleasure in making others laugh with his latest punchline.

Gary and Diane shared a love to travel, especially cruising with family or friends. One of Gary's greatest wishes was to have one final cruise with his grandson, which he was able to experience just several weeks before his passing. Gary cherished his role as "Pappou" and spent countless hours fishing, golfing, traveling and following sports with Nick for the last 13 years. These activities brought him immense joy, as they created lasting memories together.

Gary's generosity, love, loyalty and kindness made him a truly exceptional man, blessed with many enduring friendships. He was also fortunate to have several friends who became like family. Known for their hospitality and generosity, Gary and Diane loved to entertain, whether hosting a Superbowl party, a pool party at the "Garyopolis" or just a sharing a casual meal with friends. Gary had a passion for cooking, laughter and spending quality time with others.

Gary's smile never faded, even in the final days of his life. People often asked him how he could smile and remain positive and he would tell them that it was because of his unwavering confidence in God's promise of a resurrection to life on earth (John 5:28) - where sickness and death will be no more (Revelation 21:4). Gary took comfort in his favorite scriptures (Isaiah 41:10, 13) knowing that God is with him and has his hand, so he had no need to be afraid or anxious. Knowing God's promised future is near gave Gary peace as he awaits that time, resting in God's memory.

Gary will be dearly missed by all who knew him and loved him. May your memories of him bring you comfort and make you smile!

I will really miss Gary. He was always there with a smile when I came by his office at Lesko Financial. Besides helping me with financial matters he never failed to make me laugh, and took pride in talking about and sharing pictures of his grandson. My heart goes out to Diane and family.

Please accept my sincere condolences. God bless your family and friends. I enjoyed our friendship since we were in kindergarten together. Wow that goes way back. He drove our car in our wedding and I remember he surprised Cheryl and I with a bottle of pink champagne. He popped the cork and the champagne "exploded" all over my white tux and Cheryl´s wedding gown. That was only one of many great memories we had in those days. He loved baseball and had a prolific Baseball card collection (Mantle, Babe, DiMaggio, Yogi ) were just a few of many. He was an excellent bowler. Quite an athlete for sure. As we grew older life took us in different directions but whenever we ran into each other it was always a special moment reminiscing of days gone by. Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed by many-God Bless your soul and family. Your friends Cheryl and Mark Bohunicky Wesley Chapel Florida.

So sad to hear this about Gary. I retired as business manager of Towanda School District in June of 2005. I was the one who launched him becoming known as the 403B king for school districts. I was humored to see that in his obituary. I am glad now that we connected January 28, 2022 in Florida where we winter and had lunch together. Great guy. Best to his family.

I grew up in the same neighborhood as Gary - what a fantastic guy! I have many fond memories of Gary while hanging out at the Shupa's next door, around my parents store and the Ritz Theater. Everyone liked Gary! From reading everything folks have written here, it is obvious that Gary continued through life with that special charm and had great impact on so many. My sincere condolences to the LaTorrey family.

How we will miss his smile, his laugh and the twinkle in his eye when he had a new joke to share. He made everyone feel special and was such a good friend. We are so thankful for our memories together and will always smile when thinking about him. Diane, Kristina, Nick and family, we are so very sorry for your loss. I remember Gary very well. My late husband a I had just come home from a walk. His dear mother was on the floor. She asked us if we'd help her up. We automaticly went into the house and picked her up with the medical lift we both new. I called Debbie to let her know her mother had fallen. Gary said she had congestive heart failure. He said his mother didn't worry about herself. She was always concerned about everybody else. Im sure this is where Gary's love for people started.
