We met Gary several years ago via the Coca-Cola Collectors Club and became instant friends. He came to our area several years back and we showed him about a weeks worth of sights in one day. Even after Gary quit gathering many items for his Coca-Cola collection, we stayed in touch. Gary had a great sense of humor, quick wit and was a good conversationalist. For those who don't know, Gary was conservative in his political views and NO fan of Barack Obama and Elizabeth Warren, that being only one element of our many talks. To find a conservative in Massachusetts is as rare as it is to find a friend of Gary's caliber.

I first met Gary coaching across the ice from him. I was a young head coach at Needham High, he a veteran coach at Milton High. His team was ranked #1 in the state at the time. It was a home game for Gary, so he was in charge. Before the game I found out the Timing Clock was broken, time would be kept by hand. Against all odds as the game drew to a close, we were tied with Milton 5-5. My kids were completely spent - it was only a matter of time before Milton would score. We literally could not get the puck out of own end. I looked over and saw the timekeeper motion to Gary that time was up - Gary yelled right back at him to blow the whistle. This taught me a lesson in integrity, I will never forget - Gary was one of the very few coaches that would have done so - I often wondered what I would have done. We became fast friends - A more honorable man I have never met. A true friend always willing to help anyone. We were all blessed to have known him. Rest easy in peace Gary, you made this world a better place for all who knew you.

I was a student of Gary's some 30+ years ago at Pierce. His quick wit, dry humor and postitve energy is something that I won't soon forget. I helped him umpire baseball one summer back in Milton....hahah, what an experience! He dedicated countless years to coaching baseball and hockey to kids who loved playing sports and never met an 8 track he didn't like. Good teacher, loyal friend....the world could use alot more like G Maus.

Dear Maus family - We are very saddened to hear the news of Gary's passing. He was a wonderful friend who brought great joy to all he met - kind, considerate, and always a gentleman. We will treasure the memories of BC vs. BU college hockey games, Frozen Fours, flea market hunting on weekends, trips to his fishing compound in the 1000 isles, and searching for the latest Coca- Cola bottles. Lots of fun times. Thank you for your friendship Gary!

To All the Maus Family,

So very sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of Gary through the Norwood Nuggets and years later as the Milton Hockey Coach. What a kind and wonderful human being. We all felt the excitement about the California trip for the Nuggets. Fond memories of backyard pool parties and cookouts on Norton Drive. Parents and kids of all ages looked up to and respected Gary. You will be sadly missed.

Gary Maus shared a love of live on the St. Lawrence river with five generations of our family. He was a kind and gentle man, and a true friend. He leaves us with memories filled with good times. It is the little things that will live on and make us laugh and smile for years to come - and remember how lucky we were to have him in our lives.

Eulogy to a fellow "river rat", excerpts from Wind in the Willows:

"So this is a river?"
"The River" corrected the rat
"And you really live by the river? What a jolly life!"
"I live by it and with it and on it and in it" said the rat
"What it hasn't got is not worth having and what it doesn't know is not worth knowing. Lord! The times we've had together!"

Safe voyage to heaven's shores Gary our friend, they knew you were coming so they lit the bridge!

I remember Mr. Maus in the halls of Pierce Middle School back in the early 90s. I remember having him for Science and I also remember his dry humor that sometimes went over my head while other times I understood it. Either way he made the subject interesting and for me making any subject interesting took a special kind of teacher.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Maus's family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Gary's passing. Along with teaching at Pierce Middle School with Gary for several years, I also spent many Saturday mornings with him at the Milton Town Dump during bottle and can drives for the Milton Wildcats. We'd spend hours talking sports and fishing. A great man! Rest in peace, Gary.

My deepest condolences go out to family and loved ones. Gary Maus was my home room teacher as well as my science teacher at Pierce Jr High School. He was truly one of my favorite teachers! He was always so positive, quick-witted, and funny! His shear enthusiasm made science interesting and fun, though I would never admit it back then! I think the two things I will remember most about him are his integrity - both in the way he carried himself & in how he treated his students - and his unending patience! All of us who were lucky enough to be his students know what a wonderful gift we were given!

A knock on the side of the boat followed by a Boston accent saying "Shirley" let us know Gary was there and it was time to go hunt for treasures at the yard sales followed by a stop for ice cream. You and my Dad were the best of friends always helping each other with one project or another. You were always so patient with my boys taking them to your favorite fishing spots so they could catch the big one, or going in circles around Goose Bay pulling them behind your boat on a tube having as much fun as they were. We'd laugh hysterically at things only we knew were funny then you'd blow the musical horn on your van and we’d laugh some more. You will be missed but certainly never forgotten. RIP Bone Soup.

Dear Maus Family, My wife, I and our children knew Gary as a close friend and next door neighbor on Goose Bay in NY. Please accept our sympathy. We shared 35 great fishing and dining years with him, in the 1000 Isles. Gary was kind, caring, and was always greatful to be on the water and in his boat, catching champion size fish. He was revered as one of the best anglers for miles of the St Lawrence River. We'll miss him deeply. Anthony and Linda PIPerata
