Gary P McCredie, 82, of Falmouth, ME passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a brief illness and surrounded by his family. He was born June 12, 1942 in Danbury, CT to the late Harry L. McCredie and Elizabeth (Clewer) McCredie.
Gary graduated from Bridgeport University with a degree in Journalism in 1969. After working briefly as a technical writer in the defense industry, Gary moved to Alabama and co-founded Southern Auto Racing News (1973). After several years Gary moved to North Carolina where he co-founded the Grand National Scene (1977) and Grand National Illustrated (1981), the first national newspaper and magazine to focus exclusively on the NASCAR racing circuit. He went on to be the editor of Winston Cup Scene, Winston Cup Illustrated, Racing for Kids and numerous books on the sport. Over the course of his career Gary interviewed hundreds of race car drivers including Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Bobby Allison and Bill Elliot.
After retiring, Gary moved to Portland, Maine to be closer to his family. He remained active in retirement, traveling to visit friends, volunteering for several local nonprofits, attending lectures as part of Senior College and writing and performing one act plays with the Olli Players.
Gary is survived by his daughter Leslie Linfield, son-in-law John, grandson Harrison, granddaughters Megan and Morgan as well as numerous friends. He will be missed by all.
There will be two Celebration of Life ceremonies. The first will be held in Portland and another in North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, tribute donations may be made in his name to the American Lung Association.

I miss Gary very much. He was a very good friend -my best friend I had. He passed away too soon. We still had many things to do -day trips on route 1 and the rest of Maine, more plays to study together, and "Suits" -of which we only had one more season to watch. We ate many meals together and had many laughs together.
I always smile when I think of Gary. Gary was the most gentle, positive human being I've ever known -and funny. I liked spending time with him.
