Gary Mills Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral and Cremation Service - Vinita on Mar. 12, 2026.
Gary Mills beloved father, grandfather, veteran, storyteller, and unapologetic flirt, passed away surrounded by love. Born in Syracuse and raised in the breathtaking quiet of Lake Placid, New York, Gary grew up with a spirit as bold as the mountains he called home. He joined the United States Army at a young age, beginning a long career that took him across Germany, Alabama, and Kansas - serving as both a drill sergeant and, in his own proud words, an "Army chef." (Those who knew him understand the quotation marks.)

Gary never met a stranger. He was the kind of man who could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and walk away with a new friend - or at least someone blushing. He was known for his kindness, his quick wit, and his willingness to give you the shirt off his back… usually while making a joke about how good he looked without it.

After retiring from the military, Gary poured his love of cooking into the Shamrock Café and Diamond Rio, where he grilled up hamburgers that people still talk about like they were life-changing events. He also owned a small trailer park, which he maintained with the pride and precision of a golf course superintendent. Around town, he was affectionately known as "that Yankee," a title he wore like a badge of honor.

Gary loved history - especially the political kind - as well as country music, dancing, and karaoke. He served for many years on the White Oak School Board, giving generously of his time, energy, and heart. Giving was simply who he was, even when it meant he went without.

His motto was one he lived by with a grin: "If they're busy talking about me, they have less time to talk about someone else." And talk they did - because Gary was unforgettable.

He is survived by his children, Kelly Dachenhausen and her husband Spike, and Ben Mills and his wife Mindy; his grandchildren, Austin Mills, Josh Stark, and Dane Dachenhausen and his 3 brothers: Dennis, Billy and Allen Mills. They will forever carry his stories, his humor, and his fierce love.

Gary was a simple man in the best way - give him a Pepsi, a cigarette, and a bowl of cereal and he was content. But he also loved a good meal out, especially if it came with good company and a chance to charm the waitress.

He lived big, loved big, and gave big. And the world is softer, kinder, and funnier because he was here.

The celebration of life will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Burckhalter-Highsmith Chapel in Vinita, his son in law Spike Dauchenhausen will officiate. Military rites will be held during the service, provided by the Fort Sill Honor Guard. Online condolences may be made at www.highsmithfh.com. Arrangements are in the care of the Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral and Cremation Services of Vinita. "Vinita's only locally owned and operated funeral home."
