Gary Robert Owen age 81, of Winnebago, died Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato. A celebration of his life will be held from 4-7 P.M. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 at Spencer Owen Funeral Home in Winnebago. Burial will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Web tributes may be left at www.SpencerOwen.com
Gary was born on April 5, 1944 in Winnebago, Minnesota to Dwarn “Bud” and Doris (Claeys) Owen. He attended Winnebago High School and went on to obtain a degree in Mortuary Science from the University of Minnesota.
A proud veteran, Gary served in the United States Navy and the Fleet Marine Force, embodying values of honor and service that resonated deeply throughout his life. His commitment to his country and community will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege to know him. As a skilled funeral director, Gary demonstrated compassion and support for families during their most challenging times, guiding them with a steady hand and a kind heart. He was a pillar of the Winnebago community, running and owning Spencer Owen Funeral Home until his retirement in 2009, after 39 years of service. Gary was a man of many passions. He found joy in the great outdoors, whether it was hunting in the crisp autumn air or casting a line into tranquil waters while fishing. His love for nature was only rivaled by his love for family and friends, with whom he shared countless memorable moments. Left to cherish his memory are his children, children, Kelly (James) Klegstad of Richmond, MN, Ryan Owen of Winnebago, Adam (Dawn) Owen of Fairmont; grandkids, Ryan Owen of Fairmont, Micah Klegstad of Richmond, and Cooper, Mia, Kori, and Bailey of Fairmont; siblings, David (Judy) Owen and Chuck (Nancy) Owen.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Julie and his parents.
