Gary Jackson Powell, more commonly known as "Coach Powell," of Alexander City, Alabama, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, at the age of 85. Powell was a loving and devoted husband to Bonnie Powell for over 60 years. They had two children together, Jack and Alisa, who he is now reunited with in Heaven.
Coach Powell was a legend on and off the field. He has touched the lives of many in his community throughout his teaching and coaching career. He was a proud BRHS Wildcat and loved his Wildcat family. You could always catch him proudly sporting some type of Wildcat gear.
Powell enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether that was on a ball field or in his yard. He also loved hanging out and playing with family, watching sports and the weather on his TV in the den, cracking jokes, and spending his days with his beloved wife, Bonnie.
Powell is preceded in death by his son, Gary Jackson Powell Jr. (Jack); daughter, Alisa Kaye Crumpton; parents-Thurston Powell and Minnie Lee Harris Powell.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Powell; grandchildren- Christyn Simmons (Wade Simmons), Caity Parsons (Chandler Parsons), Courtney Crumpton, and Alex Crumpton; great-grandchildren- Ryder and Sadie Simmons and Langston and Lainey Parsons.
Services will be held at Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City, Alabama, on Wednesday, May 21st, 2025. Visitation will be from 12:30-2:30 in the BRHS auditorium, with the Celebration of Life service beginning at 3:00. The graveside service at Hillview Memorial Park in Alexander City will immediately follow the services at BRHS.
