Gary Edward Rouse

September 12, 1935 – February 2, 2026

Kinston-Gary Edward Rouse, 90, passed away peacefully in his chair and into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, February 2, 2026. Gary was born in Lenoir County on September 12, 1935, to the late Rupert Bright Rouse and Ruth Graham Rouse. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-two years, Elsie Smith Rouse; a son, Terry Edward Rouse; and his siblings, Rupert Garth Rouse, Audrey R. Tyson, Eris R. Bias, and Stuart L. Rouse.

A lifelong farmer, Gary lived for the opportunity to climb onto his tractor and get to work. He farmed day in and day out until the age of 85, often saying that the season of life that included hog farming was among his best. With a deep love for nature, he enjoyed time spent alone with the land and animals. Highly observant and knowledgeable, Gary could watch animal behavior and the movement of clouds and make weather predictions more accurate than those of the meteorologists.

During the final fifteen years of his wife Elsie's life, Gary devoted himself to her care, faithfully ensuring her needs were met each day. Already well known for his barbecue skills, his time at home allowed him to develop a talent for baking as well. His specialties included homemade bread, caramel candy, and dark chocolate cookies.

An avid gardener, Gary was always planting, tending, or planning for the next season. While working the land, he could spot an arrowhead from atop his tractor, often stopping to add to his impressive collection.

Gary also had a love for classical orchestral music, with a particular fondness for the violin. Sunday afternoons were routinely spent listening to classical music programs on television.

A memorial service to honor Gary's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Wheat Swamp Christian Church, with Pastor Hank Jarman officiating. Burial will be private and held on the family farm.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Cindy R. Watts and husband, Martin; grandchildren, Gary-Martin Watts (Ashley) and Suzanne L. Watts (Eric Coley); great-grandson, Maxwell D. Watts; a special sister-in-law, Thelma Barrow; brothers-in-law, Johnny Smith and David Cauley; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to Wheat Swamp Christian Church Outreach Fund, 3732 Wheat Swamp Road, La Grange, NC 28551. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
