Alamosa- Gary "Chopper" Ruybal
Gary "Chopper" Ruybal, a man known for his feisty, friendliness, and adventurous spirit, passed away peacefully in his hometown of Alamosa, CO, on July 7, 2024. Born on November 24, 1970, to the late Francis and Geraldine Ruybal, Gary's zest for life and infectious laughter left a lasting imprint on the hearts of all who knew him.
A lifelong resident of Alamosa, Gary's love for his community was as profound as his love for sports. His enthusiasm was palpable whether he was cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, reveling in the Atlanta Braves' latest victory, or indulging in the serenity of a golf game. Gary's passion for athletics was more than just a pastime; it was a way of connecting with others and giving back to the community that raised him.
Gary's dedication to sports extended beyond the role of a spectator. He was a respected umpire for the City of Alamosa Softball team and for the youth baseball teams at the middle school level. His fair play and sense of camaraderie made him a beloved figure on the field. Furthering his involvement in local sports, Gary was a proud member of the Adams State Football Chain Gang, where his commitment and team spirit were evident to all.
Beyond his public love of sports, Gary's personal qualities truly defined him. Those who knew Gary would describe him as the life of the party, always ready with a joke or a smile that could light up a room. His friendly demeanor made him a cherished friend and a beloved member of his family. Gary's adventurous nature led him to embrace life's moments with open arms, creating memories that his loved and friends will treasure forever.
Gary is survived by a family who adored him: his brother Kevin (Leslie) Ruybal of Alamosa; his sister, Raelynn (Abe) Duran of Monte Vista, CO. He was a cherished uncle to his nieces and nephews, Robert Duran, KeiAnna Duran, Xavion Duran, KayLee Ruybal, and RyLee Ruybal. Each of them will carry forward his legacy of kindness, humor, and a passion for life.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Francis and Geraldine Ruybal, as well as his grandparents, John and Reyecitas Ruybal, and Jerry and Becky Sierra. His uncle Mike Ruybal also preceded him in death. This lineage of family members instilled in Gary the values of love, family, and community that he upheld throughout his life.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024 at Rogers Family Mortuary from 5:00 to 7:00. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 10:00 at the Alamosa Cemetery.
