Gary L. Sherrod, 67, of Massillon, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly, at his home, early Tuesday morning, April 23, 2024. Born in Indio, California, September 23, 1956, a son to the late Russell and Elizabeth (Estel) Sherrod, Gary enlisted in the US Marine Corps. following his high school graduation. He served honorably and was proud of his service and proud to have been "one of the few." His work history included several different jobs, most of which included the challenge of hard, physical labor, and careful attention to detail.
A devoted husband and a loving and supportive dad, grandpa and great-grandpa, Gary cherished his wife and family. Their lives were his favorite story; the sound of their laugher was his favorite song; and even as his health began to decline, he was at his best whenever they could be together. Gary loved to cook and bake and barbeque, trying out new recipes and different dishes, experimenting until he got everything look, smell and taste just perfect – then eating it! He was also very proud of his Native American heritage, tracing his family lineage in the registry of the Choctaw Nation.
The legacy of family heritage, of honorable service, hard work, and years of fun and happy memories are what Gary leaves to those who mourn his passing – his wife, Brenda (Stokes) Sherrod, and their children, Tanya Sherrod, and Gary L. Sherrod II; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; his sisters, Leslie and Kristy Estel and his brothers, Stacey Estel and Rusty Sherrod. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Kathleen and Dawn Sherrod, and brother, Charlie Estel.
Honoring Gary's wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will mark his passing with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, April 30, 2024, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. There are no calling hours.
