Gary L. Smith
Edwardsville - Gary L. Smith, age 72, of Edwardsville, IL, passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at his residence. Gary was a beloved husband, father, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication. Gary was born in Belleville, IL, on April 21, 1953, the son of the late Robert Smith & Bernice (Mueller) Warden. He lived a life full of purpose and joy. Gary married the love of his life Carol (Grammer) Smith on May 19, 1990, in Granite City, IL. Their bond was one of deep affection and shared adventures, from beachside getaways to quiet evenings in the garden. On May 5, 1982, Gary welcomed his greatest pride and joy into the world-his son, Nathan Smith, of Highland, IL. Besides his wife of 35 years and his son, Gary is survived by a stepdaughter, Jennifer Hess & husband Robert, of Granite City, IL; a stepson, John Jeffrey Doniff, of Collinsville, IL; three grandchildren, Ashley Koch & fiancé Danny Loucks, of Edwardsville, IL, Collin Hess, of Granite City, IL, and Joshua Hess & wife Taylor, of Granite City, IL; five great grandchildren, Olivia Domitrovich, Harrison Koch, Cohan Hess, Emma Hess, and Benji Hess; and a twin brother, Bary Smith & wife Marilyn, of North Carolina. Besides his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his siblings James R. Smith, Judith A. Collins, and Mary F. Kopf.
Gary began his professional journey teaching respiratory therapy, but his passion for justice led him to pursue a law degree. He went on to serve as a defense attorney for 35 years, fiercely advocating for those in need with integrity and compassion.
Outside the courtroom, Gary was a man of many passions. A devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan, he rarely missed a game. He found peace and joy in landscaping and gardening, and cherished time spent working on outdoor projects with Nathan. His goofy sense of humor and fun-loving spirit made him the heart of every gathering.
Gary's warmth, wit, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory lives on in the laughter he inspired, the lives he touched, and the family he adored.
A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. The family suggests memorials to Glen-Ed Pantry. Condolences may be shared online at
