I am devastated at losing my loving brother Gary. While we had a typical big brother little sister relationship, growing up together was fun. He was a wonderful person, alway inquisitive and wanting to learn about everything. Living in the country and somewhat isolated he read the encyclopedia for fun. No wonder he was the smartest one in our one room school house! Gary was driven to achieve at a young age which he certainly did in so many different fields as his obituary details. My parents and I were so proud of all his accomplishments ! Love to his daughters Angela, Sarah and families on losing their Father. I'm sure he's now with God teaching a class on one subject or another. Rest in peace Dear Brother. I love you and will miss you greatly.

It was always a joy to spend time talking to Gary at the soil judging contests. His enthusiasm for soil judging and for educating students was outstanding. We will all miss him. My deepest condolences to his family.

"Thanks a Million" Gary for what you accomplished. During my PhD studies at Purdue University, I had the fortune to be next to Gary's office in the Agronomy Building. His office door was always open for anybody to walk in and asks questions, discuss soils or anything. And every day there were a lot of visits and phone calls. Every visit or phone call would come to an end we knew when we would hear Gary's voice and his signature expression "Thanks a Million". At that time, Blucher another PhD student from Haiti and I would take bets whether Gary was going to say "Thanks a Million" at the end of each visit or phone conversation. We would make projections or hypothesize how many times we would hear Gary say, "Thanks a Million". This was serious business and we kept scores. Sometimes, Blucher or I would walk to his office and start conversations with Gary just to hear him say at the end "Thanks a Million". It would cost us a commitment or so to do something for Gary so he would thank us million times. But it was worth it for the good-hearted laugh Blucher and I would enjoy. Thanks a Million Gary for making my time at Purdue less stressful. Every time I visited Purdue after graduation, I would walk by your office and say Hi when you were there and always wondered whether I should have told you about my betting. I will not be able. You will be missed.

What a legacy Dr. Steinhardt leaves behind. I never had the opportunity be a student of his, however, I have colleagues and friends that spoke very highly of his experience, knowledge and ability to educate, relate, and be a leader in everything he did. He obviously had an amazing life and made a difference with everyone he had a chance to mentor and educate. Rest in peace Dr. Steinhardt.
