Coffeyville mourns the peaceful passing of Gary Eugene Stephens, 67, who left us on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Advena Living of Cherryvale. Gary's life was a testament to his deep faith, dedication to family, and unwavering commitment to his community, especially its youth.
Born in Parsons, Kansas, on October 7, 1957, Gary was the cherished son of Lillie P. Stephens. He grew up and received his education in both Parsons and Coffeyville.
Gary proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge, before returning home. He applied his skills in carpentry and later answered a higher calling, becoming a Minister.
Gary was a devoted member of the Church of God in Christ and later founded his own church ministry, sharing his spiritual guidance with many. Though a skilled boxer in his younger years, Gary's lasting legacy is rooted in his profound impact on the Coffeyville community. For many years, he tirelessly organized beloved Easter Egg Hunts and spirited 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, bringing joy and positive influence to countless young lives.
He treasured time spent with his family above all else and was united in marriage to Lapetra "Sis Pete" Smith, who preceded him in death.
Gary's memory will be forever cherished by his children, whom he considered his greatest blessings: Ebonie (Leo) Hardy, Justin (Jan) Strickland, and Lapetra's children he lovingly raised as his own: KJ Metcalf, Jessica (Travis) Pearson, Antonio Smith, and Brittany Smith. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Tonya (Roger Martin) Stephens, Annette (Brent Hardrick) Porter, and Lisa (Leroy Alcox) Stephens, his uncle, Charles Stephens; thirteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie Mosely; his wife, Lapetra Stephens; and his grandparents, Ray and Helen Stephens and three uncles and two aunts.
A Home Going Celebration will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 11:30am at First Church of God in Christ in Coffeyville.
Friends may call on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Advena Living of Cherryvale and the staff of David W Barnes Funeral Home for their help.
