Gary Wing, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, surrounded by family in
Wake Forest, North Carolina. He was born on January 31, 1940, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He will be remembered for his boundless curiosity, kind heart, and adventurous spirit.
Gary began his professional journey as a photographer in Toronto, honing the eye that would frame his life's many adventures. He later joined Jam Handy moving to Detroit, Michigan, to work in commercial production. His career ultimately brought him to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he served as Producer and Director at Continental Films creating commercial films and multi-media productions.
Gary was an avid car enthusiast from his very first car, an MG TD. He was a self-taught sailor who found immense joy navigating the waters around Chattanooga. His remarkable ability to teach himself anything-from sailing to science-was most recently on display when he impressed everyone with his sharp insights during a visit to CERN, Switzerland.
Photography and travel were lifelong passions. He visited many of U.S. and Canadian landmarks he first glimpsed as a boy through his treasured View-Master reels-each journey bringing childhood dreams to life. With his wife Betty, he traveled to breathtaking places including Antarctica, Geneva, and the French Alps, and together they shared a love of cruising the world's oceans. Gary cherished spontaneous cross-country road trips, exploring national parks and capturing the beauty of the world. At 83 he made a solo trip in his Mini Cooper from North Carolina to Prince Edward Island Canada, much to the chagrin of his family.
A true warrior, Gary defied the odds multiple times, overcoming insurmountable health obstacles with unmatched grit and a stubborn refusal to give up. His strength was remarkable surviving Steven Johnson Syndrome, a stroke, skin and throat cancer and a broken hip. A testament to his remarkable resilience and love of life.
A small family service will be held immediately. Celebrations of Gary's life are planned for spring in both Wake Forest and Chattanooga with details to be announced later.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider a donation to the
American Cancer Society in his memory.
