Gary Woolever Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lulloff-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home on Dec. 2, 2025.
Gary Norman Woolever was called home to glory by his Lord and Savior on November 29, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born on July 10, 1940, in Portage, Wisconsin, to Norman and Ivadell (French) Woolever. Gary's journey through life was marked by a spirit of adventure, a dedication to his family, and a lifelong commitment to his Christian faith. His passing in Madison, Wisconsin, was met with both sorrow and a celebration of a life well-lived.
Gary's early years in Portage laid a strong foundation for the creative, gentle, and friendly man he would become. His life was a tapestry of varied experiences that included serving his country with honor as an Air Force Military Police veteran, mastering the intricate skills of a commercial refrigerator technician in Arizona, embracing the rugged life of a cowboy, and showcasing his precision and artistry as a gunsmith in Colorado. Each chapter of his career was a testament to his adaptability and passion for hands-on work.
Family was the cornerstone of Gary's life. Though he grieved the loss of his beloved wife, Evelyn Woolever, his parents, and his brother Jim (Sue) Woolever, his heart was filled with love for his surviving family members: his step-children, Louise (Scott) DeWerd, Carol (Michael) Gescheidle, and Kim (Tim) Genin, along with his eight step-grandchildren and their spouses, and sixteen step-great-grandchildren-with one more on the way-added immeasurable joy to his days. Gary is further survived by his son Steven Woolever, his granddaughter; and his two other children from his first marriage. His siblings, Gwen (Bill) MacHolz, Rollie (Diane) Woolever, and Cheryl (Larry) Laack, shared in the many chapters of Gary's storied life, as did his numerous nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends.
An active participant in his community, Gary found great pleasure in his hobbies and interests. His love for the Old West was not just a pastime but a passion he lived out as a reenactment actor in Tombstone, Arizona. As a member of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), he connected with others who shared his enthusiasm for history and marksmanship. His creative spirit shone brightly as he meticulously tied flies for fly fishing-a skill that complemented his love for fishing and hunting. Gary's zest for life was evident in his love for travel, exploring new places, and making new memories.
Gary's legacy is not only in the lives he touched but also in the values he embodied. His creativity was not confined to his work or hobbies but was an integral part of how he approached life's challenges and opportunities. His gentle demeanor was a source of comfort and strength to those around him, and his friendly nature ensured that no one remained a stranger for long.
As we bid farewell to Gary Norman Woolever, we remember a man who lived fully and loved deeply. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his stories will be told for generations to come. Gary's journey on earth has ended, but his spirit remains a guiding light to all who had the privilege of knowing this remarkable man.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at the Lulloff-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home, Dodgeville. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will commence at Eastside Cemetery with military honors accorded. We enjoyed watching Packer games, going out to eat at our favorite Mexican restaurant and watching Gary with our kitten, Betty Sue, who would sit on his lap every time they came to visit. Also enjoyed playing euchre with Gary and Evie! Good memories. God bless his soul. He is now with his sweetheart Evie.
