Gary Young Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 10, 2026.
Gary was born on March 19, 1941, in Cedar, Kansas. He spent his childhood there until age fourteen, when his family moved to McMinnville, Oregon. He graduated from McMinnville High School before beginning a life of service and dedication that would define him for decades to come. After high school, Gary enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed in the Philippines and later served as a Navy recruiter. He completed seven years of honorable service before returning home to pursue his education. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in business. He devoted more than 35 years to the Washington State Auditor's Office, where he built a long and respected career before retiring. In 1980, Gary met the love of his life, Jane and they were married a year later. Gary embraced Jane's daughter Kimberly, as part of his family. His devotion to Jane was unwavering, and their partnership remained a source of strength and joy throughout their life together. A lifelong Kansas Jayhawks basketball fan, Gary also had a deep appreciation for American history. He enjoyed time at the firing range and cherished hunting with his children; experiences that connected him to the quiet, open landscapes he had known since boyhood. He also collected historical ammunition from many eras, a hobby that reflected his curiosity and love of learning. Gary was an active member of Vancouver Church. He was deeply loved by his family and friends, and he will be profoundly missed. He will be remembered for his loyalty, his quiet strength, and the encouragement he offered so generously to those around him. Gary is survived by his wife Jane Young, children Mitchell Young, Rodney Young (Beth), Kimberly Stewart (Brian), grandchildren Joshua Young (Shannon), Nicholas Young (Beth), Hailey Prior (Riley), and Tyler Stewart, great-grandchildren Ivy, Cobalt, and Winter Young, and Xavier and Maverick Prior. A memorial service celebrating Gary's life will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. All are welcome to attend.
